Google Play Store Gains ‘Free App Of The Week’ Section

Everybody likes free things, right? Of course we all do, at least when there are no strings attached. Well, we have good news for Android users—at long last, Google has added a "Free App of the Week" section to the Play Store. Just like it sounds, the new section features a paid app that is temporarily available to download for free. This is a great way to beef up your app catalog with paid titles that you otherwise might have skipped over.

This week's free app is Card Wars - Adventure Time by Cartoon Network. The app normally runs $2.99 but is currently available at no cost if you own a compatible Android device.

"Floop the Pig! It’s Adventure Time CARD WARS! Play the game inspired by the Adventure Time episode, 'Card Wars'! Summon creatures and cast spells to battle your way to victory," the app's description reads. "Command an army of awesome warriors, including Husker Knights, Cool Dog, the Immortal Maize Walker, and even the Pig to destroy your opponent’s forces! Place towers and cast spells to unleash ultimo attacks."

The new section actually made its debut last week but is now gaining widespread attention. Its existence is not immediately obviously in the Play Store—rather than feature it at the top of the app page, you have to scroll through several sections before it appears.

Amazon used to have a Free App of the Day section in which it would feature a paid app at no cost on a daily basis. However, it stopped doing that about a year and a half ago. In its place is Amazon Underground, an app that gives Android users access to over $20,000 in apps, games, and in-apps for free. Paid apps featured as part of Amazon Underground are available for free through the service and include free access to in-game content too.
