Google Nexus One Isn't Coming To Verizon Wireless

Google's Nexus One, which is actually built by HTC, has been a pretty hit in the tech world. It's now available for AT&T, T-Mobile USA, Sprint and Verizon Wireless. Wait, scratch that last one. A few months ago, Google put up a page that stated a Verizon-compatible Nexus One would be available in the near future, and to keep checking back for updates. Today, we checked back, and the update that we found wasn't what we expected.

Rather than shipping the first CDMA Nexus One on America's largest wireless carrier by subscription count, it looks like the Verizon Nexus One will never actually see the light of day. An update from Google on Nexus One partnerships today not only revealed that Vodafone would soon be getting the handset in the UK (along with SFR in France and other carriers in various European nations), but that Verizon Wireless wouldn't be getting it at all. In fact, users waiting for the VZW Nexus One were told to look elsewhere--here's the exact quote:

"In the US, if you’ve been waiting for the Nexus One for Verizon Wireless’ network, head over to http://phones.verizonwireless.com/htc/incredible to pre-order the Droid Incredible by HTC, a powerful new Android phone and a cousin of the Nexus One that is similarly feature-packed. It will be available in stores on April 29th."

Responding to loads of negative criticism, a Google spokesperson responded with the following comment:

"We won't be selling a Nexus One with Verizon, and this is a reflection of the amazing innovation happening across the open Android ecosystem. Verizon Wireless customers who want an Android phone with the power of the Nexus One can get the Droid Incredible by HTC."
At the end of the day, the story is simple: the Verizon Wireless Nexus One won't be coming. Like it or not, that's the decision that has been made by someone, somewhere. To be honest, the Droid Incredible is a great alternative, and at least there is an alternative. But for those longing for Google's first smartphone, we can understand your frustration.
