Nintendo Classic GoldenEye 64 Gets Beautiful Source Engine-Based Multiplayer Fan-Made Remake

Most old school gamers would name GoldenEye 007 as a title they have fond memories of playing. it was a huge hit on the Nintendo 64 console, and for the past 10 years a group of enthusiastic fans have been remaking the game for PC using Valve's Source engine. It's been playable throughout development, though the latest release—the first in over three years—is a big one with a bunch of new content and polish added.

GoldenEye: Source now features 25 remade maps, 10 different mulitiplayer modes, and all 28 weapons from the original game, all faithfully recreated on the Source engine. The development team said it was aiming for a unique mix of retro and modern style gaming in hopes that GoldenEye: Source would ultimate appeal to fans of the original and anyone simply looking for a fun multiplayer experience.


One of the big accomplishments with this latest release is that the developers were finally able to finish the Bunker map.


"Bunker was a map that seemed to be in perpetual development almost since the mod was founded. Nobody seemed to be able to finish it. Finally Fourtecks stepped up and did the main control room. He payed exquisite attention to the movie to get all the details just right," said Luchador, Lead Artist. "Then I decided to create the rest of the map. I blocked out then refined the layout based on playtests. Made lots of custom art assets. It was with Bunker that I really started to push the limitations of the Source Engine. Indeed, content had to be cut just to get the map to run. Nevertheless, I did the best that I could under the memory restrictions and I’m still proud of the amount of detail I was able to put into the map."

GoldenEye: Source is a great looking game and you don't need a heavy hitting system to play it. Here are the minimum system requirements:

• Operating System: Windows Vista or later
• Processor: 3.0GHz Dual-Core
• Graphics Card: DirectX 9 compatible with 256MB VRAM
• System Memory (RAM): 2GB
• Hard Drive: At least 10GB free space

And here are the recommended specs:

• Operating System: Windows 7 or later
• Processor: 2.5GHz Quad-Core
• Graphics Card: DirectX 9 compatible with at least 1GB GDDR5 VRAM
• System Memory (RAM): 4GB
• Hard Drive: At least 10GB free space

One thing to note is that the remade title is multiplayer only—there's no single-player experience. That said, there are bots available for offline play, though it's an experimental feature is in "no way polished or finalized," the developers state in a related FAQ.
