ioSafe is known for making internal hard drives that can survive extreme heat. Now, with the ioSafe Solo, the company is offering an external drive model that can protect against fire and water. According to the company, the Solo can withstand fires up to 1,550 degrees Fahrenheit, as per the ASTM E119 industry standard. The Solo can also survive being submersed in water for three days at a depth of ten feet.
To protect your data against heat and water, the ioSafe incorporates three key technologies: FloSafe, HydroSafe, and DataCast. FloSafe provides airflow cooling to help dissipate heat during normal operation. FloSafe also detects destructive heat levels and closes the cooling vents to protect the data in cases of extreme heat. HydroSafe technology provides a water barrier while still dissipating heat through that same barrier. To protect the drive from extreme heat, ioSafe's DataCast endothermic insulation technology uses trapped water molecules to maintain internal heat temperatures to just above 200 degrees Fahrenheit, even if outside temperatures soar to 1,550 degrees.
All in all, the ioSafe Solo’s technologies combine to protect your data from outside harm. However, should the drive itself fail, you’re a bit out of luck, as the company doesn’t currently offer a RAID model. Still, for the reasonable price, the ioSafe Solo provides respectable protection from fire and water. The company also includes a $1,000 Data Disaster Recovery Guarantee with registered products.
The ioSafe Solo connects to a computer using a standard USB connection and is available in 500GB, 1TB, and 1.5TB configurations. Prices start at $149.
