D-Link's New DWR-2010 Router Lights Up Your Home With Next-Gen 5G Connectivity

Look out, cable internet service providers (ISPs), the rollout of 5G networks could disrupt your business. While 5G networks are still being fleshed out across the country, D-Link is ready on the hardware side with a new high-speed 5G NR Enhanced Gateway (DWR-2010), which is essentially a router that taps into mobile 5G networks to deliver Wi-Fi connectivity to household devices.

"With expanded spectrum and new applications, 5G is going to bring more competition to the broadband market within the coming years," said Raman Bridwell, vice president of product and services, D-Link Systems, Inc. "This gateway will help more people access that network in more places with the same wireline experience we have today."

D-Link isn't mincing words when it comes to the attack on traditional wired broadband service. From D-Link's vantage point, 5G adoption is going to accelerate in 2019, which in turn will push more people towards wireless carriers as their home internet service provider. D-Link's newest router plays into that, with the company claiming the DWR-2010 enables downloads speeds more than 40X faster than the current average fixed broadband download speed in the US of 70Mbps.

The company is billing this as an AC2600 dual-band Wi-Fi router, with 1,723Mbps available on the 5GHz band and 800Mbps on the 2.4GHz band. It also features MU-MIMO support.

D-Link's newest router supports VoLTE as well, and is compatible with sub-6Ghz or mmWave frequencies in 200Mhz (2 x 100MHz) or 800MHz (8 x 100MHz) configurations. It offers customization options for service providers so that it can be deployed on a range of network configurations.

Beyond that, however, D-Link didn't get into specifics, such as what wireless carriers might be on board with this concept, and how data pricing will shake out. The company also didn't say how much the DWR-2010 will cost, though did mention it will be available in the second half of 2019.
