AMD Radeon VII Flagship Gaming Card Rumored End Of Life As RX 5700 Navi Takes Flight

Could it be the end of the line for AMD's Radeon VII flagship consumer graphics card? That might indeed be the case according to a new report making the rounds late this week.

According to the report, the Radeon VII has been has reached end-of-life status and supplies of the card are drying up fast. French site CowcotLand states the cards have been disappearing off store shelves and when cards are found in stock, they are slapped with a significant price premium compared to MSRP.

We decided to do some checking ourselves, and visiting Newegg showed that four out of the five Radeon VII cards that the retailer sells are out of stock. Only the ASRock Phantom Gaming X Radeon VII is available to purchase (priced at $669).

A trip over to Amazon shows similar results, as the various Radeon VII cards are only available from third-party sellers. The one card sold directly by Amazon -- the PowerColor Radeon VII -- shows that it will be back in stock on July 23rd. Likewise, the ASUS and MSI Radeon VII cards sold by B&H are listed as discontinued.

The Radeon VII was unveiled just this past January at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, and was released on February 7th. The Radeon VII was AMD's first 7nm consumer graphics card, and is based on Vega 20 architecture. As we noted in our review of the card, the Radeon VII in general has performance that falls in between the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 and GeForce RTX 2080.

However, its positioning and $699 price tag has been complicated by the arrival of the Radeon RX 5700 Series. While the Radeon RX 5700 XT doesn't quite match the performance of the Radeon VII, you can't argue with the much lower price tag of $399. And we've yet to see performance figures for the Radeon RX 5700 XT 50th Anniversary (priced at $449), which should further close the performance gap.

We don't yet have any official word yet on whether the Radeon VII has indeed met an early demise, but where there's smoke...
