Amazon Reportedly Prepping Multiple Next-Gen Kindle Fire Models
With the introduction of the Nexus 7, it felt like Amazon's Kindle Fire was immediately outgunned. Both units cost $199, but the Asus-built Nexus 7 is clearly the superior. It has Android 4.1, a far faster processor, a smoother interface -- there's really no good reason to choose the Kindle Fire over the Nexus 7 unless you're head over heels about the UI tweaks on the former. It's obvious that Amazon isn't going to just stand still while a newer, flashier product comes out to rival its own tablet, and according to Demos Parneros, president of U.S. Retail for Staples, those "next tablets" could be here sooner rather than later.
With the back-to-school and holiday shopping seasons just around the bend, Amazon is reportedly preparing to unleash "five or six tablets," with varying sizes and features to hit a variety of price points and demands. That's a huge jump from the sole Kindle Fire, but a 10-inch edition may very well steal some business from those who are considering an iPad but don't want to shell out for the full $499.
If the next-gen Kindle Fire comes in 7" and 10" sizes, and perhaps a 4G + Wi-Fi and a Wi-Fi only model for each, that could indeed add up to a few SKUs. Will Amazon try to hit an 8" or 11" size, as well? We're sure the bookworms will be keeping a close eye for an official reveal as the fall semester draws closer.
