AdMob: iPhone Holds Lead over Android Devices

Mobile advertising firm AdMob this week released its latest Mobile Metric report. In it, AdMob indicates Apple's iPhone still holds a numbers advantage over Android devices, even through Android handsets have been popping up left and right.

The numbers aren't necessarily indicative of the state of the mobile market, as they only take into account those which have accessed AdMob's network. With that said, the advertising firm noted some 12.7 million Android devices worldwide in the month of May, compared to 11.6 million Android devices and 27.4 iPhones one month prior.

While Apple's iPhone platform still holds the edge, it will be interesting to see where things go from here. Apple on Wednesday said it had already sold 1.7 million iPhone 4 handsets in the first three days since launch, making it "the most successful product launch in Apple's history," according to Steve Jobs. Likewise, Motorola and Verizon are gearing up to launch the Droid X, arguably the most anticipated Android handset around, at least until the Droid 2 launches.

And if that weren't enough, rumors are still swirling that Apple's iPhone is headed toward Verizon, and headed there soon. According to a Bloomberg report, Verizon will begin selling Apple's trendy device in January 2010, thus ending an exclusivity agreement between AT&T and Apple.
