Blackberry Buys Secursmart To Bolster Enterprise Security Services
BlackBerry's bread and butter has always been the enterprise sector, and in a bid to make sure it retains that market, the Canadian handset maker went out and acquired Secusmart, a major player in high-security voice and data encryption and anti-eavesdropping solutions for government organizations, enterprises, and telecommunications service providers.
"We are always improving our security solutions to keep up with the growing complexity of enterprise mobility, with devices being used for more critical tasks and to store more critical information, and security attacks becoming more sophisticated," said John Chen, Executive Chairman and CEO, BlackBerry. "The acquisition of Secusmart underscores our focus on addressing growing security costs and threats ranging from individual privacy to national security. This acquisition bolsters our security solutions with leading voice and data encryption and anti-eavesdropping technologies, and furthers BlackBerry’s security leadership in end-to-end mobile solutions."
These two firms are already familiar with each other as business bedfellows. BlackBerry previously partnered with Secusmart to offer the company's security technology as part the SecuSUITE for BlackBerry 10. This allowed the two firms to provide Secusmart-equipped BlackBerry smartphones to a significant number of German government agencies.
The acquisition plays to BlackBerry's strength and is another bone to throw to its niche market. Unfortunately for BlackBerry, it probably won't be enough to propel the company to the same level as Apple (iOS) and Google (Android) in the mobile market.
BlackBerry didn't disclose how much it paid for Secusmart or what the terms of the deal were.
