Things have not gone well for the first autonomous shuttle bus in Las Vegas. The vehicle was reportedly involved in an accident during its first hour of operation. In the immortal words of Homer Simpson, D'oh. The accident was minor and all the passengers on the free shuttle bus operated by AAA and Keolis were unharmed during the fender bender. While the accident wasn't caused by the autonomous bus, this handily highlights the potential downside of an autonomous vehicle. A semi-truck backed into the autonomous shuttle reportedly grazing the fender. The issue here is that while the Navya shuttle... Read more...
It might not quite be Skynet, but Saudi Arabia this week made an announcement concerning one of its newest citizens. However, we aren't talking about a human in this case; Saudi Arabia has granted citizenship to a humanoid robot named Sophia. The announcement was made at the Future Investment Initiative in Riyadh, and Sophia was constructed by Hanson Robotics. Sophia was on stage during the conference when she was given the "news" by CNBC's Andrew Ross Sorkin that she is now a Saudi citizen. "I want to think very much the kingdom of Saudi Arabia. I’m very honored and proud for this unique distinction,"... Read more...
If you spend any amount of time on the Internet, you have certainly run across CAPTCHA on a few occasions. CAPTCHA is the security device that forces you to read squiggly words and type them into the box to prove you are a person and not a spamming robot sent from the future to troll forums and steal all of our memes. The schtick for CAPTCHA is that computer programs can't read the words, but that is no longer true. AI has been created that is able to defeat CAPTCHA security meaning all our memes aren't safe after all. The AI was inspired by a human brain, specifically the human visual cortex.... Read more...
Anyone out there who shares Elon Musk's fear of a Skynet apocalypse may find Google's latest AI dubbed AlphaGo Zero to be frightening. The new AI is the followup to the original AlphaZero AI that dominated all human players in an ancient Chinese game called "Go". Google chose Go because it is said to be a game of intuition and the original AlphaGo AI was able to beat the top human player in four out of five games. AlphaGo Zero completed three days of self-learning and then challenged AlphaGo for a match. Zero decimated its predecessor winning 100 games out of 100. "AlphaGo Zero not only rediscovered... Today, Intel announced something that it hopes will help in the fight against NVIDIA in the AI market. Intel's new processor is called the Nervana Neural Network Processor, and previously went by the codename "Lake Crest." Intel says that it has been working to make the Nervana processor for three years and it is now ready to reveal some details on the processor. Nervana is a purpose-built architecture for deep learning and the primary goal for the hardware team was to provide flexibility needed for deep learning primitives and to make the core hardware as efficient as possible. Intel... Read more...
Amazon has updated its voice assistant Alexa with a cool new feature that many people who have an Echo device with multiple users have been wanting. That new feature is the ability to identify voices and allow access to your own messages, playlists and other content without having to tell the Echo device specifically which content to access. The new feature started to roll out yesterday. Voice recognition works with the Echo smart speaker and any other devices with Alexa built-in. The feature comes after Google launched its Home speaker earlier this year with similar functionality. Setting the... Read more...
While companies like Amazon and Google are angling to put more devices into your living spaces to create a smart home revolution with the Amazon Echo and Google Home Mini, Microsoft is looking to counterpunch with its own Cortana service. A new report indicates that Microsoft has added a new "Connected Home" section to the Cortana Notebook. This new integration was first reported by Windows Central, which says that Connected Home allows users to tap into five services at the moment: Wink, Insteon, Nest, SmartThings and Hue. Of course, you will need to sign-in to each respective service to enable... Read more...
SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk has been making headlines recently for his rather dire predictions regarding the future of artificial intelligence. The tech mogul fears that AI may advance to the point where it could turn on its human "handlers" and could even spark World War III if left unchecked. However, Google search and AI chief John Giannandrea feels that Musk's apprehension and warnings about doomsday scenarios are way overblown. While speaking at the Disrupt conference in San Francisco this week, Giannandrea shot down Musk's proclamations while not actually invoking his name (although we... Read more...
If you have ever seen a Google Street View car gliding around with its camera rig on top taking pictures of your area, your first inclination might be to spam the cameras by doing something silly. I mean you certainly wouldn't be the first person to point at your junk or play dead for the cameras. Google has reportedly upgraded the Street View camera fleet to gather more information to feed its machine learning and AI tech back at home base. According to a report from Wired, this is the first significant update to the tech used by the Street View fleet in eight years. Previously, the camera towers... Read more...
Do you want World War III? Because artificial intelligence (AI) is how you get World War III — well, at least according to SpaceX/Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Musk has long been an incredibly outspoken tech figure against the rise of AI, and the threat that it poses to humanity. Now the tech wizard says that AI could end up sparking another global conflict that could ensnare the world’s superpowers. Musk often uses Twitter as a means to let his myriad of thoughts flow out to the general populous, and those thoughts were on clear display this morning. “China, Russia, soon all countries w strong computer... Amazon and Microsoft have decided to work together in the AI voice assistant arena rather than erect barriers between one another. In a move that will ultimately benefit customers, Alexa and Cortana will be able to communicate with Cortana and vice versa. What that means is customers with Echo devices can say, "Alexa, open Cortana," while owners of Windows 10 devices can say, "Cortana, open Alexa." You do not always see this kind of cross-platform cooperation between companies. Case in point, we reported last week that Microsoft has left the ball in Sony's court in terms of cross-platform play... Read more...
Microsoft is already dealing with the fallout from Consumer Reports’ decision to pull its recommendation of Surface PCs due to reliability issues, and now a former executive is spilling the beans on turmoil within the company’s Cortana team. Qi Lu, a leading AI researcher, headed up Microsoft’s applications and services unit before abandoning ship earlier this year to work at Chinese tech powerhouse Baidu. In a recent interview, Lu explains that Microsoft at first didn’t really take Amazon seriously, contending that Alexa technology was far behind what Cortana was capable of achieving. “Google... Elon Musk, Tesla and SpaceX head, is worried about the future of artificial intelligence (AI). While Musk and his companies are working on AI, with his OpenAI DOTA 2 bot recently destroying the best human gamers, he recently criticized Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg for having limited knowledge of the dangers of AI. Musk isn't alone in his fears of AI; Mark Cuban also thinks that AI will take jobs from humans. Elon Musk said late last week that people should be more concerned with AI than the risks posed by North Korea. Musk tweeted Friday, "If you're not concerned about AI safety, you... Read more...
We are just a few days away from the comsumer launch of AMD’s next generation Vega graphics architecture, which will underpin the Radeon RX Vega family. However, there is already talk about what’s coming after Vega; and that is Navi. Up until this point, not much has been said about Navi architecture, other than vague descriptions citing “scalability” and “next generation memory”. Other than that, we’ve been told that Navi will be built on a 7nm FinFET process when it launches next year. Today, however, a new report is suggesting that Navi will be the first GPU from AMD with circuity that is dedicated... Read more...
