The New X Series...

It's hard to tell, but it seems like Winbook is using a carbon fiber composite in the construction of the X notebook, as its texture is awfully close to that of the previously reviewed Asus W5A.

The X notebook can be opened via an easily pressed release mechanism. The only down side with this design is that the button is thin. Ideally, we would like to see the button use the space along the casing's edge. This would give it a more intuitive and comfortable feel.

Front (left to right):

Left (left to right):

  • VGA out port
  • Lite-On LSC-24082K DVD-ROM/CD-RW (24x CD-R/24x CD-RW/24x CD-ROM/8x DVD-ROM)
  • 1 x USB 2.0/1.1 port (underneath)
  • Card reader (SD/MS/MSPro/MMC)
  • 1 x USB 2.0/1.1 port

Back (left to right):

  • Lock port
  • Power jack
  • Exhaust vent

Right (left to right):

  • 1 x PCMCIA slot (Type I/II)
  • Microphone jack
  • Headphone jack
  • 4-pin mini 1394 Firewire port
  • 1 x USB 2.0/1.1 port
  • S-video out port
  • Modem port
  • Ethernet port

As we have noted in the past, the placement of a communication port (especially the ethernet port) on either the left or right side makes orientation more of a hassle. In this case, if your ethernet cable is to the left side of your notebook, or vice versa, you will have to feed the cable around the back side to plug it in. This also goes for the modem, but fewer and fewer people seem to be putting that port to use.
