Hewlett-Packard is stepping up its game in the professional all-in-one market with the introduction of its third generation Z1 G3 workstation. HP started off by working on the Z1 G3’s chassis, making this latest model both 47 percent smaller and 51 percent lighter than the previous generation. Intel is officially launching a brand new series of Xeon processors today, the Xeon Processor E5 v4. Unlike mainstream desktop products, which feature Intel’s latest core technologies like the Skylake-based Core i7-6700K, mission-critical, big-iron parts like the Xeon E5 v4 series are more complex and go through much more qualification, and as such tend to leverage core technologies that have long been proven in the consumer space. When we think of SoCs, we typically think of smartphones, tablets and other low-power devices; but how well are they suited for servers? Well, as it happens, an SoC can deliver a huge punch when working on certain workloads, as Serve the Home found out after putting Intel's Xeon D-1587 through the paces. To look at the Dell Precision 15 5510, you wouldn’t know that it sits in the middle of Dell’s workstation lineup. GIGABYTE is a big fan of giving its customers choice on the motherboard front, which sometimes involves releases that support brand-new architectures on older hardware, or hardware you might not even expect. Lenovo expanded its ThinkPad line this week with the ThinkPad P Series of mobile workstations. The new line will include Lenovo’s highest-performing ThinkPad mobile workstations, edging the ThinkPad W series out of that spot. Intel has refreshed its line-up of processors in a number of categories over the last few months.
