Verizon Wireless & Skype Team Up For Wireless Mobile Solution

A free Skype application is coming in late March that will allow Verizon Wireless customers with select phones and plans to make free calls via Skype. Under a deal announced at Mobile World Congress, users with one of nine compatible Verizon Wireless phones and a voice and data plan will be able to call or instant-message other Skype users for free or call regular phone numbers outside the United States for a fee paid to Skype. The calls will use Verizon's network and won't use up minutes on a cell phone plan. When using Skype to call regular phone number in the U.S., however, minutes will be deducted.

The application will be able to run all the time in the background, enabling other people to contact you via Skype even if the phone is on standby mode. In the past, other wireless carriers have blocked the Skype application from running all the time.

Yeah this is a smart idea by Verizon I think. When they get all the LTE rolled out through the year there gonna be it for data to. I already use Verizon, but I like to see things like this go in. I think as the 4G coverage expands we will see some more changes as well. I hope the iPhone 4 hits to this spring.

I love this company. Verizon is smart. I just wait for Windows Phone 7 series (God I dislike that long name) and LTE and I'll have an UBERPHONE!

Yeah I heard the windows phone 7's were pretty nice, and watch a Microsoft demo in which it looked to be very fluid in it's app, directory, function usage etc. It looked very well put together as a smart phone OS. That is what we need everywhere more competition for better features and better pricing.

I know there is a way at least with the iphone to use skype for usa calls over wifi, i wonder if there will be a way to go about doing this with verizon.  Btw, do these calls use your minutes or just data?  I'm a little confused about this.
