NVIDIA SVP Tony Tamasi Claims Tegra 5 Will Be Faster Than PS3 and Xbox 360

It’s (delightfully) evident how powerful mobile processors and graphics have become, but NVIDIA’s Senior Vice President of Content and Technology Tony Tamasi believes that mobile firepower is about to outpace the popular Xbox 360 and PS3 gaming consoles.

“The PS3 and Xbox 360 are barely more powerful than mobile devices,” Tamasi told Bit-Tech. “The next click of mobile phones will outperform [them].” Specifically, he’s referring to the Tegra 5 mobile processor, which will follow the new Tegra 4 chip. Reportedly, Tegra 5 will feature CUDA 5 and boast a Kepler-class GPU and support Open GL 4.3.

It’s not all that hard to imagine that Tamasi’s prediction will come to pass, and soon. Mobile chip technology has exploded in recent years--many of us have still-functioning laptops with the same processor clocks and one quarter the cores of our phones--with no signs of abating. Meanwhile, the Xbox 360 and PS3 continue to age.

Of course, seeing that kind of graphics power on a smartphone might be a ways off, but with monster gaming tablets like NVIDIA’s Project SHIELD and the Razer Edge hitting the market, it would almost be ridiculous if they didn’t outpace gaming consoles soon.

NVIDIA has previously compared Tegra graphics/gaming performance to consoles but this is a bold statement regardless. Bring it, NVIDIA!

Comparing a modern mobile proccessor to 8 year old hardware in consoles go nvidia

yeah i was just thinking the same thing when reading this.  like comparing a 2013 Vette to a 1990 Vette.  whoa!!

Im waiting for the day consoles become powered by mobile processors. Maybe then you can have some interchangeable parts and not have to go 10 years for a new console. Im still waiting to see how the new gen consoles stack up but I bet they are surpasses within a couple years by mobile chips if they keep going at this pace.

Yes i greatly look forward to what nvidia has to offer. Its crazy that we are talking about tegra 5 already when a tegra 4 device hasnt even been released yet only demoed. Technology especially mobile tech is moving at break neck speeds and probably wont stop any time soon. I mean samsung has already produced freaking octa core (thats 8 count them 8 cores) in my phone. It surpasses processors in many laptops in your local best buy nowadays just about except for all the other stuff but im just focusing on processors right now.

Yeah but what is the real use of an 8 core processor in the mobile world. I wouldn't be better to have a quad or something that runs faster if temps aren't a factor. Just seems things are getting out of hand with more than 4 cores in a mobile device.

Now if they could show temps are lower and it run faster for the same or cheaper price then maybe that would be something.
