AMD And Crytek Announce Mantle Support For Cryengine-Powered Games

Nvidia may have just announced GameWorks support will be baked into Unreal Engine 4, but the Red Team is firing back with its own announcement today: Upcoming versions of Cryengine will support AMD's Mantle API. Just to be clear, this announcement refers to an upcoming engine that hasn't been used for a shipping title yet -- Cryengine 3, the engine that powered Crysis 3, has been retired in favor of a new-from-the-ground-up approach.

The new CryEngine will support the Xbox One, PS4, Wii U, and PC spaces and we're honestly a bit surprised to see Crytek jumping onboard with AMD. I spoke to Crytek representatives when I attended APU13, and while they were very interested to see what Sunnyvale had to say about its next-generation API, they were also cautious. I was told that Crytek was extremely careful when it came to adopting new standards because those technologies had to fit within the company's workflow without making it too difficult to support multiple vendors or relying on flashy but limited tricks of creating one specific effect or capability. Crytek, in other words, was only interested in supporting standards that were flexible, scalable, and delivered a high enough performance improvement to be interesting. I was left with the impression that the company was still in "Wait and see" mode last November.

Evidently they've seen enough.

"Crytek prides itself on enabling CRYENGINE with the latest and most impressive rendering capabilities,” said Cevat Yerli, Founder, CEO & President of Crytek. “By integrating AMD’s new Mantle API, CRYENGINE will gain a dimension of ‘lower level’ hardware access that enables extraordinary efficiency, performance and hardware control."

Right now, we don't know how many upcoming Cryengine games will use Mantle, or if support will be patched in to later dates. Cryengine-based games expected in 2014 include Homefront 2, Evolve, and Star Citizen (this last was already known as a Mantle title). The open-world roleplaying game Kingdom Come: Deliverance is expected in late 2015.

nvidia is mad ^^

atleast then I'd actually be able to run Crysis 3 at a decent framerate.

If more games support it and it ends up being better then i will make the switch.

Glad to see that adoption of Mantle continues to pick up. This API lets a lot more people get in on gaming.

is fine with me after wasting my money on a 10 minute long cry3 game where the credits was longer than the actual game and cry1 was so bug it freezes same place in early game I never could move past and complete it. I do not care if I never buy another cry game or engine game and do not give a phuck about anything sorry cheap low quality amd either. Intel Nvidia W7 and DirectX FTW...

shame on you crytek- you got your start and fame with pc and nvidia.. ** from my ur4 engine post-> Intel Nvidia W7 and DirectX FTW. Guess what- I have seen tests amd r7-8-9 against 780ti and D-X in games optimized for amd and mantle- the 780 still beat them out- amd is just poor cheap chit trying to dictate to MS they should use mantle over D-X. MS should kick all support for amd hardware in windows and force amd to buy out mac or linux and then they can do what they wish with its own os. AMD is cheap chit they have to near give away and then give ya 50 games on top of that. AMD games are not as pretty do not run as well and said games for amd generally run better on Nvidia- you surely have far less problems or downtime with intel and nvidia hardware vs amd. AMD cpu's can not multi thread in the windows environment thus the hotfix' since xp sp3 built into every os and tricks the os into thinking amd' say 4 core cpu at 2 gb each is really just 1 large 8 gb core- where intel can multithread and tricks the os into thinking its cpu of 4 cores is 8 cores or HT cpu' anyway. I get a big kick when I read amd 50 game cores when I do not know of 1 game on earth that uses more than 2. I do know as far as windows goes- it see' amd as just 1 core- sounds like false ads and fraud to me. MS windows is Intel and Nvidia and always has been and when MS goes to make a new os they do not give a phuck if amd is at the table or not- amd is cheap chit for some poor pricks mommy to buy for him. MS gives AMD enough support to keep monopoly lawsuits off its back- being AMD tries to tell ms what to do seems to me they/ ms should try and kick all support for amd garbage. I would surely laugh out loud to hear not 1 bit of your cheap amd bullchit will work in windows anymore- but hey- you got mantle maybe linux and mac. Oh thats right amd is poor and can not buy either- both Intel and Nvidia could buy them out- lol. AMD is good for lowering intel and Nvidia prices and AMD is cheap laptops and sorry consoles that more than likely will not last a year and fake bitcoin money- it would be funny if made to pay it all back- for other compute needs like Folding etc etc Nvidia is the better card. All games AMD for pc and surely games for next gen consoles are less than they could be and will have more probs be more ugly and will be poor chitty ports dumbed down for pc. Games for the next 4-5 or 6 years or so will be poor as hell thanks to next gen low quality and or AMD console graphics. I being a pc only player and can max out all settings in all games out and NV physx say- thanks for nothing AMD. I have near 600 games bought over 400 last year and over 100 already this year- I can skip amd games and save my money and be happy- just like I normally skip anything ea and sony and some other brands or I will only buy them when they are 5 or 10 bucks or less or a 5 dollar bundle with 8 to 15 games. I will skip titanfall and some others and survive just fine- I protest with my wallet.. I have no probs saving a lil longer for the best and I buy my own chit. I say again- Intel Nvidia W7 and DirectX FTW- WOOT!!!!!!!!!

Might now be a bad idea with DX12 coming out and now integrating a form of Mantle to all GPU's, not only AMD

so Warface ?

Looking forward to the new games coming soon with this engine! Also the support for next gen consoles

I think that Ezhunt has forgotten that Microsoft picked Amd over Nvidia for its next gen console as did Sony must not be so cheap crap after all.

I would say that's a hasty generalization that Microsoft & Sony 'choose' AMD over Nvidia when it can easily be flipped around that Nvidia refused to work with Microsoft and Sony because of the terms Microsoft and Sony discussed with them or the low margins of supplying a console wasn't worth spending their time and resources on.

It's a business, and Microsoft and Sony both know how disadvantageous it could be to sell their console too severely at a loss.

AMD is definitely in a position one may argue is in a 'desperate' position with Nvidia having a 82% marketshare in the workstation market (the most important market for both to be seen as strong/weak by investors) , which is good for consumers.

It's good for consumers because they need to be aggressive, and it's likely they gave pretty good and more aggressive deals/pitches to Microsoft and Sony because they need it more.

It's exciting  what they've done since their recent partnerships. As a  result of their locked-in partnerships with Microsoft and Sony,  they're providing unique features and services for Radeon buyers like Mantle and TrueAudio.

Regardless of all that, both are great GPU companies . Stop accusing one of them of selling crap GPUs--unless a specific card or lineup of card was personally that way for you and you want to give people a heads-up to perhaps avoid such experiences for themselves.

And we need them both to be that since it's a oligopoly market.

Don't think for a second it would be good for anyone if only one of them dominated the market for too long. At the same time, they both have to keep the other accountable in all the markets they compete in for the sake of their industry, current buyers, and potentials buyers today and in the future.

Kevin is right.. AMD is a solid performer, but most importantly... its less expensive.  Take a look at the pc market. Super gaming rig? Intel... budget gaming rig? Amd.

Now as far as mantle... I think this is a good thing, even with DX12 coming..because right now, mantle is here. There are no dx12 cards.. and dx12 isnt even here yet.

Wow, it almost makes me want to become an AMD user...almost.
