No Man's Sky Stumbles Out Of The Gate With Performance Issues On PC

No Man's Sky

Well the good news is that No Man's Sky has finally arrived. Unfortunately, one of the most hyped games of the year brought with it a few annoying bugs and performance issues on the PC platform and they're ruining the experience for many outspoken gamers. Sean Murray, co-founder of development studio Hello Games, says his team is aware of the issues and is working to resolve them.

"We’re tracking a number of issues, bugs and crashes that players are reporting, and working to resolve as soon as possible. The number of people players, and length of average play session, has been far more than our small team could have anticipated. That said, we’re working quickly to adapt. We sincerely apologize to anyone affected in the meantime," Murray stated in a blog post.

Murray also said that Hello Games brought on a new QA team to complement the existing Sony QA team that failed to root out all these issues ahead of time. The new team is apparently larger in number than the entire Hello Games staff, so hopefully that means they'll make quick work out of finding and stomping out bugs.

In addition to a new QA team, Hello Games hired someone to manage a ticketed support system that kicks off on Monday. Until then, Murray suggests a series of workarounds for anyone experiencing trouble with known issues. They include:
  • If you believe you are stuck, or can't reach your ship, be aware you can jetpack forever whilst pushing against any surface.
  • If you have made a mistake, you can revert to any of your two previous saves in the Options menu.
  • If you have left your somewhere inaccessible, you will be able to summon it from landing pads or beacons found at most buildings or points of interest (marked by question marks).

Things could definitely have gone smoother for the launch. Not only are there numerous performance issues and bugs, including game crashes, some players report not having received their pre-order bonus. In other cases, players say they received their bonus but the name displayed in-game is incorrect.

On top of all that, there's a glitch that lets unscrupulous players cheat to quickly obtain rare items and finish the game. In one instance, a player was able to get his hands on five Atlas Stones in around half an hour, whereas normally it would take at least ten times as long.
