When AMD released its second quarter financial results last month it didn't say much about server volumes or market share, save to note that its performance "met expectations." The major news of the call turned out to be the company's decision to pull Bobcat's launch into 2010 and push Llano into 2011, which defrayed most conversation on market share. If AMD's server sales were indeed within the company's expectations, it can only mean the company was expecting to be pummeled. AMD revealed more information on its first Fusion-class product at ISSCC this week. The new chip will combine both a CPU and GPU on a single package, but don't use either nickname—AMD is  calling the new chip an "APU" or Application Processor Unit as part of its bid to shift product focus from the core components in a system to the tasks and workloads a system is capable of handling. Done properly, this could solve certain nomenclature confusions that have plagued the computer market from the very beginning, but we aren't holding our breath. With the International Solid-State Circuits Conference less than a week away, Intel has released additional details on its hexa-core desktop, next generation mobile and dual-core Westmere processors. Much of the dual-core data was revealed last month when the CPU manufacturer launched Clarkdale (our review is here if you want additional information on the CPU and its integrated graphics core). Today we've got a look at Intel's new line of Core i5 Mobile processors, code named Arrandale. Like Pinetrail for netbooks, Intel's new Arrandale processor combines both an integrated memory controller (DDR3) and GPU (graphics processor) on the same package as the main processor. Though it's not a monolithic device but is built upon multi-chip module packaging, it does allow these primary functional blocks to coexist in a single chip footprint or socket. Intel is planning to show off a myriad of new products at the Consumer Electronics show taking place in Las Vegas in a few weeks, including a whole family of processes built using the company's advanced 32nm High-K / metal gate manufacturing process. On tap will be a number of mobile parts that feature 32nm processor cores linked to 45nm GPUs on a single chip, in addition to a slew of other products related to 3D content creation, WiMax, MIDs and more. Although Intel talked about their upcoming 32nm Westmere-based processors at IDF, and even showed off a few demos of the next-gen core at work right on stage, we still got in some private face-time with a few Intel reps and engineers in a closed door session to glean a few more details. A couple of the items we saw firsthand were Intel's upcoming Clarkdale (not to be confused with Clarksfield) and Arrandale processors. If early reports are accurate, Westmere—Intel's GPU/CPU fusion—will take center stage at the company's developer forum next week. The new processor has been a topic of interest for months, especially after Intel announced it was scrapping its plans to build both the CPU and GPU on a 45nm process. The company's strong 32nm ramp allowed it to skip straight to a 32nm CPU / 45nm GPU combination, which should decrease the chip's overall power consumption.
