In case you haven’t already read the Hot Hardware reviews, we’re big fans of Samsung’s 850 EVO and 850 PRO SSDs. The drives come backed with 5-year warranty (10-year for the PRO), offer excellent reliability, and are top-notch performers in synthetic and real world benchmarks. Remember when it was considered a big deal when SSDs hit the $1/GB mark? That seems high now, but remember that some of the first SSDs to hit the market cost about $8/GB. Then, mainstream Solid State Drives crossed the $0.50/GB mark, and today, it's super easy to find SSDs on sale that cost about ~$0.35/GB. According to predictions at InformationWeek, SSD pricing could become 1:1 with mechanical hard drives in late 2016. Imagine getting a 4TB SSD for about $150 - I am salivating at the thought. When we reviewed the latest 6 terabyte hard drives at the beginning of the year, we acknowledged that, for all the benefits of solid-state drives, capacity and price-per-terabyte remained in the hard drive’s “pros” column. But with Fixstars’ announcement that it will be shipping 6TB SSDs this summer, solid-state drives are looking even better. If you're the owner of one of Samsung's 840 EVO solid-state drives, chances are you're familiar with the serious speed degradation problem that can arise over time, in some cases throttling it to 1/10th of the speed it should be. Well, the good news is that a fix is available; the bad news is that it's not even clear at this point if it actually squashes its bug for good. To update, you'll need to grab the latest version of Samsung's Magician, versioned 4.6. Samsung is introducing a number of new members to their SSD 850 EVO line-up of Solid State Drives, based on different form factors than the standard 2.5” drives we showed you here. Toshiba and SanDisk announced the joint development of what they claim is the world's first 48-layer three dimensional stacked cell structure flash memory, otherwise known as BiCS (Bit Cost Scalable), a 2-bit-per-cell 128-gigabit (16 gigabytes) device. Put another way, BiCS is essentially Toshiba's version of the 3D NAND flash memory that's shipping with newer Samsung solid state drives (SSDs).
