We're seeing more and more CULV notebooks hit the market these days. The growing sector of Consumer Ultra Low Voltage machines attempts to bridge the gap between lower cost netbooks and full-size notebooks, offering a more powerful chip than the ubiquitous Atom options we see in netbooks, but one that consumes less power than the mainstream Core 2 Duo processors we see in many full-size notebooks. The Toshiba Satellite T100 Series fits in the CULV segment and attempts to offer the comfort and convenience of a standard laptop in an ultra-thin package. As the larger model in the T100 series, the... Read more...

In our 2009 Notebook Buyer's Guide, we discussed the merits and perils of CULV based notebooks. This suddenly popular and quickly growing sector looks to bridge the gap between the bargain basement netbook and the full-size notebook. It makes sense to think that a swath of 13.3" to 14" machines would be needed for those who find 10.1" netbook displays too tiny and 15.4" rigs too large, and that's exactly the sweet spot that Asus is attempting to hit with its new UL30 range. The particular model that we're looking at today is the UL30A-A1, though a handful of other configurations will be available... Read more...

Although MSI’s “unlimited power” claim is a bit of an exaggeration, the new Wind12 U200 does boast of a 6.5 hour battery life, thanks in to the Intel CULV platform and the company’s independently designed ECO Intelligent Battery Solution. This netbook is similar in weight and size to 10-inch notebooks and weighs approximately 3.09 pounds with the battery installed. Read on for full details about this system in the press release below. While netbooks are certainly garnering the majority of the notebook spotlight these days, thin-and-light machines such as Acer's Timeline series and MSI's X-Slim family are making a move for the forefront. Just this week, Lenovo also introduced its first significant foray into the segment, and we have to say, it should provide some solid competition in the burgeoning market. The 14" U450p is a perfect in-between for folks not happy with a cramped ultraportable and not able (or willing, as the case may be) to lug around a full-size 15" notebook. Boasting an expected Intel CULV (Consumer Ultra Low... Read more...
MSI shocked the ultraportable world when it unveiled the stylish X-Slim X340 and X320 earlier this year, and now the company is pushing its sweet, sexy new line even further with the introduction of the X400. This "thin-'n-light" notebook is based on Intel's CULV (Consumer Ultra Low Voltage) platform, and the whole chassis never exceeds one inch thick. Even with the battery installed, the X400 weighs just 3.3lbs, which is pretty darn impressive for a 14" machine. Other specifications include an HDMI output, optional Blu-ray drive, 1080p video support (we'll believe it when we see it), 802.11b/g/n... Read more...
