Windows 10 Mobile Anniversary Update Reaffirmed For August 9th Launch

Windows 10 has been out for almost a year and Microsoft is likely getting ready to release one of its most important updates. The Windows 10 Mobile Anniversary Update should start rolling out on August 9th for unlocked Lumias and other Windows Phone devices. Phones sold through carriers are likely to receive the update one week later, beginning Tuesday, August 16th.

Microsoft's official Lumia India Twitter account also claimed that the update would occur on August 9th. However, the tweet has since been deleted and the account has responded with vague references to a general Anniversary Update.

Why is there a week difference between the unlocked and carrier dates? Carriers like to have extra time for testing "features and enhancements" from the update. Both dates of course are subject to change, however, Microsoft does not currently seem concerned about any potential delays.

Not all devices will be supported. Devices that will definitely be able to upgrade to Windows 10 include:
  • Lumia Icon
  • Lumia 1520
  • Lumia 930
  • Lumia 640 and 640 XL
  • Lumia 730 and 735
  • Lumia 830
  • Lumia 532, 535, and 540
  • Lumia 635 1GB, 636 1GB, and 638 1GB
  • Lumia 430 and 435
  • BLU Win HD w510u and BLU Win HD LTE x150q
  • MCJ Madosma Q501
Devices such as the unlocked Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL have already received the latest 16236 firmware. The firmware update improved Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, support for double tap to wake-enabled, better image and video quality, and some audio call improvements. Phones such as the AT&T Lumia 950 might simultaneously receive the 16236 firmware and the Anniversary Update.
