Americans Spend Nearly an Hour a Day Using Smartphones

Before smartphones became virtually ubiquitous there were feature phones, and prior to that pagers ruled the day. And before that? It's hard to remember how we ever got along without today's technological wonders, especially when you examine how dependent we've become to certain devices. To wit, a new study by Experian reveals that the average American adult spends 58 minutes a day using his or her smartphone.

Let's go ahead and round that up to an hour per day. Over the course of a year, that translates into nearly 15 days -- DAYS! -- of smartphone usage. What could be so important that we devote so much time to these handheld gadgets? That's the wrong question to ask.

Smartphones
Apple iPhone owners spend more time per day on their handset than Android phone owners.

By their very nature, smartphones aren't defined by a single task. Experian found that adults devote 26 percent of their smartphone usage to talking, 20 percent texting, 16 percent to playing on social networks, 14 percent to browsing the web, 9 percent to emailing, 8 percent to playing games, and 2 percent to using the phone's camera or GPS.

Platform plays a role, too. Breaking it down by mobile OS, Android users spend an average of 49 minutes per day using their smartphones, versus iPhone owners who use their devices a full 26 minutes more.
