The “Kilimanjaro” native PCIe to NAND flash controller platform, co-developed by OCZ Technology and Marvell, underpins a new PCIe-based storage solution called the Z-Drive R5, an upgrade to OCZ's Z-Drive R4. Kilimanjaro is designed to enable improved scalable performance and redundancy as well as lowered costs for data centers while obviating any other controllers, and the Z-Drive R5 is its foil. Today, OCZ is letting fly with the second coming of a VCA 2.0 product, this time squarely targeting the enterprise, datacenter and high-end workstation markets. Where OCZ's RevoDrive line targets more consumer-like price points, their Z-Drive line is about no holds barred performance for the enterprise. The Z-Drive R4 with VCA 2.0, the same SuperScale Storage Accelerator, and now an octet of SandForce SF-2200 controllers, has landed on our testbeds for a few cycles of the benchmark gauntlet. A few months back, OCZ took the wraps of their RevoDrive 3 product line. The RevoDrive 3 was the first product to make use of what OCZ calls their SuperScale Storage Accelerator processor with VCA 2.0, or Virtualized Controller Architecture. We just got off a conference call hosted by OCZ Technology’s CEO Ryan Petersen on which he discussed the rapidly evolving market for PCIe-based solid state storage solutions and unveiled the company's next generation enterprise-class PCIe storage product, the Z-Drive R4. Yow! OCZ Technology has always been about shattered records and making impressive numbers look like old hat with even more impressive numbers, and they're doing it again at this year's Computex. The company has achieved a new performance record at the show, delivering one million 4K write IOPS and 1.5 million read IOPS on a Z-Drive-equipped single server. The outfit's new Z-Drive R4 PCIe SSD was showcased doing the damage in a single platform server by Colfax International. OCZ Technology's Z-Drive was obviously a pretty big hit for the company, and understandably so. It was one of the first major PCI-Express Solid State Drive options on the market, and it broke all sorts of speed records as well. Take for example the RAID 4-pack configuration we setup here with Intel's X25-M SSD or perhaps the omnipotent Fusion-io ioDrive.
