In the past couple of years, the high-end Android smartphone market in the US has largely been dominated by Samsung, LG, and HTC. Although Sony continues to compete in the mobile market, Verizon Wireless customers haven’t seen a Sony-branded phone since the Xperia Play in 2011. As you may recall, the Xperia Play didn’t sell as well as Sony hoped which led to a significant price drop just eight weeks after its launch. Although Sony fans that are committed to Verizon Wireless have had to wait a few years, Sony is now offering the Sony Xperia Z3v. On paper, this phone looks very promising and offers... Read more...
Ever since Sony cut a major deal for the Gaikai cloud gaming service, pundits have watched to see how the company would integrate the technology into the PlayStation product line. At CES this week, Sony finally took the wraps off that announcement and the initial program looks amazing. The upcoming PlayStation Now service will stream games from central servers to the PS4, PS Vita, PS3, TVs, tablets, and smartphones. Sony says PSNow will be supported on "most" of its upcoming 2014 Bravia televisions, but hasn't announced any additional partnerships with specific hardware vendors. The company claims... Sony’s latest Xperia smartphones, the Xperia Z1 and Xperia Z Ultra, look rather fetching but have been frustratingly unavailable in the U.S. until now. Sony now has them on its U.S. website for preorder, where you can snag the Smartwatch 2 ($199.99), Xperia Z1 ($649.99), and Xperia Z Ultra ($649.99). The Xperia Z1 offers a 20.7MP camera and rocks a quad-core Qualcomm MSM8274 (2.2 GHz) processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, microSD card slot, USB 2.0, microUSB, and a 5-inch (1920x1080) display. It’s also designed to be waterproof and dust-resistant, which is a big bonus for... Read more...
Not content with just a smartwatch? How about a phone to pair with it? Sony's going all out today, also launching the new Xperia Z Ultra, which is said to boast the world's slimmest and largest Full HD smartphone display. Blurring the line between phone and tablet, and pushing the size envelope altogether, this 6.4" handset is truly massive in its class. It's also waterproof and dust-resistant, boasting a durable design that sets it apart from more fragile rivals. It's powered by a 2.2GHz Snapdragon 800 (quad-core) CPU, as well as a 4G LTE radio for ultra-fast wireless connections. Other specs... Read more...
In some aspects, Sony's Xperia line is beginning to feel like BlackBerry's line of products a few years ago: we're seeing a new model number, but honestly, everything looks largely the same. Sony's design chops are certainly laudable, but the Xperia UL sure looks just like every other Xperia smartphone to ship in the past year or so. That aside, it seems that the UL is a thicker version of the Xperia Z, with a 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro, a 5" 1080p touch panel, and a killer 13MP rear camera. Bluetooth, NFC and Wi-Fi are all onboard, and the phone is fairly rugged despite its style. It's... Read more...
If you’re sipping a beverage right now, go ahead and swallow before we give you the price tag for the new Sony Xperia ZL smartphone. Ready? It’s $759.99. If you’ve been eagerly anticipating the release of the Xperia ZL, you can preorder the device on the Sony Store and receive your phone “on or about” April 8th. All that scratch will get you a beautiful and powerful 4G LTE smartphone with Android 4.1 on board that features a near bezel-less 5-inch display (1920x1080), 1.5 GHz Quad Core Snapdragon S4 processor, 2GB of RAM, and up to 16GB of internal storage (up to 32GB... Sony may not be at the forefront of mobile market share, but it's certainly hoping to change that over time with the advent of the Xperia line. Today, two new mobiles are being unveiled, the Xperia SP and Xperia L. The SP has a 4.6" HD Reality Display (720p), BRAVIA Engine 2, a co-moulded aluminum frame, an 8MP camera, NFC, LTE and a dual-core 1.7GHz Snapdragon CPU. The phone weighs 5.5oz., and there's a pretty stellar notification light along the bottom to spruce things up. The Xperia L is the lower-end of the two, offering a 4.3" FWVGA display, 1GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4, 8GB of internal storage,... Read more...
One of the grooviest gadgets to break cover at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas last week was Sony's Xperia Z smartphone. Armed with a tantalizing collection of components and features, and waterproof up to three feet, the Xperia Z is definitely on our radar. Might Sony also be readying an Xperia Z tablet? Twitter account @Xperia_info certainly thinks so. As far as we can tell, there's no affiliation between Sony and @Xperia_info, though whoever is charge of the account seems to think they know an awful lot about the rumored tablet. If the information posted is accurate, the Xperia... Read more...
Seems like a couple of companies are in the giving mood this holiday season. Sony and Box have just renewed a nice promotion through 2013, enabling those who buy an Xperia smartphone with Android 2.1+ to grab 50GB of Box cloud storage for free. Box works much like Dropbox or Google Drive, but getting a full 50GB for nothing isn't a bad deal. Whether it be images, videos, apps, documents (you name it), you can store, share and access files from any of your connected devices – computer, smartphone, tablet and internet enabled TV. The only major catch is this: it's not compatible with the Xperia... Read more...
Is there really any place to go after you've put your phone into a new James Bond film? If you're Sony, the answer is obviously "yes." The company has just revealed the latest Xperia P, and it's not for the everyman. It's the Project: 24K Gold Xperia P, and according to Sony, it's simply a fun project to "experiment with different materials." Evidently, that includes gold! All told, the company is only making 15 of these, and it's instructing deep-pocketed fans to keep an eye on its Facebook page for information on how to buy one. Talk about making someone's holiday dreams come true...... Read more...
If it's good enough for James Bond, surely it's good enough for you, right? Sony and AT&T are hoping so, as the phone showcased in the upcoming Skyfall flick will be heading exclusively to AT&T in the U.S. The company's Xperia TL will offer a 13MP camera, integrated NFC, 4G LTE radio, and a 4.6" 1080x720 resolution display, which is powered by the Mobile BRAVIA Engine. There's also DLNA streaming, ‘One-touch’ connectivity for sharing with others, and there's even an Xperia SmartTag in the box. Using near field communication technology, SmartTags let you store device preferences... Read more...
Ready for yet another Android superphone? It's here, and it's on AT&T. Sony's first 4G LTE smartphone is the Xperia Ion, and it's in stores and available to order online today for $99.99 on a two-year contract. That's actually on the low end of the pricing scale for LTE phones, and the Ion is certainly one of the more handsome devices to ship on AT&T airwaves. It offers up a 4.6" HD "Reality" 720p display, HDMI output, a 12-megapixel camera, and access to the Sony Entertainment Network. There's also DLNA media streaming, a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and 16GB of internal memory (with a microSD... Read more...
Sony is trying a new technique to drum up excitement and hype surrounding the upcoming announcement of its next Xperia smartphone: Instead of setting a date and teasing upcoming features, Sony is putting the actual announcement date in the hands of its fans. Initially, the revelation of the new handsets was planned for June 22, but Sony is letting users "Fast Forward" the announcement using a button on the company's Facebook page. At the time of this writing, 20,794 fans had already moved the date up by more than five days to June 14 (this Thursday). Users can click the "Fast Forward" button once... Read more...
Just because Sony Ericsson is no more (that morphed into Sony Mobile a few months ago), doesn't meant that existing Xperia owners are being left to fend for themselves. With Android 4.0 slowly making the rounds, Sony has announced that Ice Cream Sandwich will be making it onto a number of Xperia phones...just a few months later than expected. Last we heard in November, the rollout was supposed to happen in March 2012, but now it looks like mid-to-late April will be the earliest that any of Sony's phones see ICS. According to Sony, their devs have been working hard to iron out the kinks. The first... Read more...
