Talk about a marvelous name for a product. In the world of flash memory, it's hard to keep any two devices apart. They all just seem to bleed together, accomplishing the same task regardless of the label. But SanDisk has somehow figured out a way to perk itself up in the midst of such an industry. How so? By naming their newest SD card the "WORM." The SD WORM card is a rather unique Secure Digital card, designed to actually store images for up to 100 years, which is far longer than the average disc. Most archives have used tapeless storage that was built to last for centuries, but having a memory... Read more...
A number of iPhone worms have been released recently, all targeted at jailbroken iPhones. On Saturday, Sophos reported on a new worm that is a lot more malicious than these earlier attempts. Of the ones we reported on recently, the first was a little on the lame side, although it forced you to restore your iPhone, if you didn't want to pay a 5 euro "blackmail fee." The second was just plain silly, and more proof-of-concept, and all it did was "rickroll" your iPhone. There was a third iPhone worm that uploaded your iPhone data to a site, and that is along the same lines as this new one. The reason... Read more...
Since the April 1st Conficker target date came and went, people have been waiting for the other shoe to drop. And on Wednesday night, Conficker downloaded the update that people were expecting, via the P2P functionality that's part of the malware.Dubbed Conficker.e, the new version appears to focus on that all-too-familiar item that malware writers want: money. The new version will terminate on May 3rd, and what Conficker.e did was download other malware to the already infected host computers. Kaspersky Labs notes that it downloads, for example, a rogue antivirus app, Spyware Protect 2009 (above).... Read more...
April 1st has come and gone, but researchers are convinced we haven't seen the last of the Conficker worm. While there are ways to determine if you are infected, the Conficker Working Group has posted a simple and visual aid to help as well. The Conficker Working Group is a group of organizations that have joined forces to fight the Conficker worm. According to the site, the work on the "test" was Joe Stewart from SecureWorks. All you have to do is go to the page and view the images there, and compare them to the table of results. It will indicate if you have Conficker A, B, C or none of the above.... Read more...
Microsoft and nearly 20 other organizations and firms have joined forces to formulate a coordinated, global response to the Conficker (AKA Downadup) worm. At the same time, Microsoft announced a $250,000 reward for information that leads to the conviction of the hackers behind Conficker. The last time Microsoft offered a reward was in 2004, when it posted a $250,000 reward for the maker of the Sasser worm. Along with Microsoft, organizations involved in this collaborative effort include ICANN, Symantec, F-Secure, NeuStar, VeriSign, CNNIC, Afilias, Public Internet Registry, Global Domains International... It has been said that Microsoft rushed the development of Vista SP1 in order to help correct some of the  stability and compatibility flaws that were keeping some large customers away from the relatively new OS.  New reports from testers indicate that this rush might show itself in all new set of issues. Here's what one tester had to say:“Based on my informal tests conducted in the first hours of having Vista Service Pack 1 in hand, it's hard to draw any hard and fast conclusions. However, these mixed results do show some promise--and also show that your experience with SP1 may vary depending... Read more...
Garmin's backing into the cellphone business in a big way. They've already got the GPS navigation thing down pat, so why not add voice, websurfing, MP3 playback, a camera, and a touchscreen to their devices, and save customers from lugging two, three or four items around instead of one?  Meet the Nuvifone. The Nuvifone includes two features relatively new to Garmin navigation — a “where am I” button that tells the user the nearest address, intersection and nearby emergency facilities, and another that can be used to find a lost car in large parking lots.Beyond navigation, the Nuvifone offers... The "Storm" worm computer virus/botnet/trojan horse/malware extravaganza got its name from its first method of transmission -- an e-mail attachment with the subject line: "230 dead as storm batters Europe."  Since then it's used all sorts of clever ruses to get people to click on it and infect their machines. And unlike your typical worm, it isn't a form of "look at me" vandalism. The Storm botnet is designed to do something criminal. But what? Old style worms -- Sasser, Slammer, Nimda -- were written by hackers looking for fame. They spread as quickly as possible (Slammer infected 75,000... Read more...
A new worm has been unleashed that has the capability of deleting MP3 files. Known as the Deletemusic worm, it uses removable devices as a vector. Once the infected device gets accessed, the worm starts its work. It first multiplies onto all drives and is executed when Windows fires up. “‘With so many people relying on their PCs to store their digital music, rather than physical CDs, a worm capable of deleting an entire MP3 collection could leave someone thousands of pounds out of pocket,’ said Orla Cox, Security Operations Manager, Symantec Security Response. ‘We would recommend all users with...
