We've come a long way since the days when hard drives were measured in megabytes. Underscoring that point is the industry's first 10TB enterprise-class HDD, the host-managed Ultrastar Archive Ha10 SMR built by HGST, a division of Western Digital. HGST says the capacious HDD is intended of next-generation archive applications. The 10TB monster is a helium-based drive, the third of its kind by HGST in the past two years. HGST says it's deployed over a million helium-based HelioSeal HDDs to date and is super confident in the technology's reliability. In the task the new drive was purpose built for... Read more...
When solid-state drives are unencumbered by the SATA interface, beautiful things can happen. Look no further than the Intel SSD 750 Series, which we reviewed two weeks ago, to see what kind of performance is achievable with an NVMe PCI Express interface. If you can actually believe it, HGST, a Western Digital company, has actually announced a new NVMe PCI Express SSD that is rated faster than even Intel’s new barnstormer. But to be fair, the Intel SSD 750 Series is aimed at the consumer/prosumer market whereas the new HGST Ultrastar SN100 is aimed squarely at the enterprise market. The HGST Ultrastar... Read more...
Western Digital ended the work week by rolling out four new network attached storage (NAS) solutions split into two product segments -- the My Cloud Expert Series consisting of the My Cloud EX2100 (two-bay solution) and My Cloud EX4100 (four-bay solution), and the My Cloud Business Series with the My Cloud DL2100 (two-bay) and My Cloud DL4100 (four-bay).The My Cloud EX2100 and EX4100 sport the latest versions of the dual-core ARMADA processor (385 and 388) and offer top-class read and write speeds for simultaneous, high-performance HD media streaming and up to 24TB of storage capacity, WD says.Both... Western Digital's participation in the SSD market has been spotty at best. Nearly five-years-ago, the company produced a line of desktop SSDs - like so many other I/O vendors - but today, you'll only find a small hint of flash in a WD drive if you look to the hybrid Black2. WD has instead used its subsidiary HGST to handle everything SSD, but with its major enterprise focus, no one would fault you if you were unaware that WD even dealt with SSDs at all. Well, the enterprise is one area WD seems pretty content to stay in, and expand. Today, the company announced... Read more...
Storage guru Western Digital on Wednesday expanded its business-class NAS (Network Attached Storage) portfolio with the WD Sentinel DX4200 storage server powered by an Intel Atom C2338 dual-core processor. Western Digital is pitching its latest box as a complete solution using Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 workgroup operating system The WD Sentinel DX4200 features a four-bay design with tool-less and tray-less installation. It supports up to 16TB of capacity, and the drives are also hot swappable -- if an HDD goes down for whatever reason, you can swap it out with a new one without skipping a... Read more...
Western Digital this morning hit the storage industry over its head with a couple of new high capacity hard drive options being offered in the company's WD Red line of drives. One is a 5-terabyte HDD and the other is a first-to-market 6-terabyte capacity HDD based on a tightly packed five-platter design, and like all WD Red drives, they're both intended for home and small office NAS systems In addition to these new high capacity storage solutions, Western Digital announced the introduction of its WD Red Pro HDD series available in 1TB to 4TB capacities for the medium and large business NAS markets.... Western Digital used MacWorld as a springboard to announce its new My Passport Pro, the first portable, Thunderbolt-powered dual-drive storage solution. The high-performance storage device is intended specifically for Mac users working with large files including photographers, videographers, graphic designers, and other creative pros, WD says. Since this is a dual-drive solution, users can choose between RAID 0 for added performance or RAID 1 for data redundancy. "The only Thunderbolt dual-drive solution that’s bus-powered, WD’s My Passport Pro enhances the workflow of mobile creative... Read more...
The price disparity between solid state and hard disk drives often forces mobile and small form factor users into the unenviable position of choosing performance over capacity. Provided they’ve got the budget, desktop users needn’t compromise, because their systems can accommodate multiple drives of different form factors without issue. But SFF and mobile systems are usually outfitted with only a single 2.5” drive bay, so if you want the performance of an SSD, but need a large capacity drive, you’ve got to shell out big bucks for a high-capacity SSD or settle for the lower... Solid state drives continue to be all the rage, due to their durability, silence, and high performance versus traditional hard drives, with spinning magnetic media. And while SSD prices have dropped significantly this past year, they remain relatively expensive in terms of cost per gigabyte, and are still many times the price of a hard disk drive. When it comes to choosing a storage scheme, there are couple of cost effective solutions for power users. One is to install a solid state drive (SSD) for the OS and programs, and a spacious hard disk drive (HDD) for storing photos, videos, and other data hogging files. A second option is to invest in a solid state hybrid drive, which is an HDD with an SSD cache buffer for frequently accessed programs. Both are serviceable, though both have tradeoffs (the first takes up two storage slots, and the second isn't as fast as a dedicated SSD). There's now a third solution courtesy of Western Digital,... As laptops and ultrabooks get thinner, even 9.5mm-thick mobile hard drives are starting to look bulky. Western Digital is stepping up with a new 1TB WD Blue hard drive, which comes in at a mere 7mm thick. The 2.5-inch drive supports standard 9.5mm drive bays in today’s laptops, but it’s also thin enough to accommodate future, compact notebooks. WD's Blue line has even thinner drives, albeit at lower capacities. “Users with large portfolios of content no longer need to sacrifice capacity when buying an Ultrabook or upgrading to a thin and light notebook,” said Matt Rutledge,... We all know that solid state storage is the sexy option these days, but a lower cost per gigabyte and higher overall capacities have kept mechanical hard disk drives (HDDs) from becoming irrelevant or otherwise obsolete, especially in datacenter environments. It's no surprise, then, that Western Digital continues to devote time and resources into HDDs. The company's newest product is its WD Se family, a line of enterprise-class HDDs that are best suited for bulk cloud storage, small-to-medium business (SMB) environments, high-end NAS applications, replicated environments, archiving, and other backup-heavy... In a way, it's a wonder that Dropbox is still an independent company. But as long as it is, it might as well bulk up on partnerships. Western Digital is the latest friend, with WD SmartWare Pro launching with Dropbox integration. It's a new software tool that enables users to back up files to any USB external HDD or to the cloud using their Dropbox. Additionally, in the event that a file is deleted, lost, or a previous version of a file is needed, WD SmartWare Pro makes it easy to quickly restore and retrieve backed-up data. Additionally, in the event that a file is deleted, lost, or a previous... Read more...
Hybrid hard drives featuring mechanical platters supplemented by a chunk of speedy solid state storage for fast access to the most frequently accessed programs seem to be where the market is headed, and Western Digital has no intention of being left behind. In fact, WD claims it's now sampling the thinnest 2.5-inch hybrid hard drive the world has ever seen. WD's drive measures a scant 5mm thin and is slim enough to squeeze into today's slimmest notebooks, like Ultrabooks (Intel) and ultrathins (AMD). According to WD, the new drives have a footprint that's nearly 50 percent smaller than traditional... Read more...
