Sometimes, technology is more than just a boost in processing power or an increase in capacity. Sometimes, it's about the people. Qualcomm has just unveiled some pretty radical stuff through its Wireless Reach initiative, and in cooperation with Project RAY. Project RAY designs accessibility tools for blind and visually impaired people, and the company jointly announced this week that they have developed the RAY mobile device, an always-on, easy-to-use, multi-function, smartphone that is synchronized with Israel's Central Library for the Blind, Visually Impaired and Handicapped audio books content.... Is 3D really here to stay? It's still hard to tell; the test of time has yet to be passed, but it seems to be gaining support rather than losing it. Now, even AMD is onboard the bandwagon, this week releasing a software kit to accelerate the development of stereo 3D. AMD today announced the availability of the AMD Quad Buffer SDK for AMD HD3D technology, delivering a vital tool to developers engaged in building immersive stereo 3D capabilities into upcoming game titles. Concurrently, new passive and active monitors from Acer, LG, Samsung, and Viewsonic have further expanded ecosystem support for... Read more...
In January 2009, we reviewed the NVIDIA 3D Vision kit which brought the latest in 3D active-shutter technology to the PC gaming world. Since then, 3D has exploded on to the scene as motion pictures, games, and other video media all have support for the technology in a major way. Nowadays, when you go to a movie theater, chances are you'll have the option of watching new releases in either 2D or 3D. Moreover, HDTVs and Blu-ray players now offer 3D capable features that bring stereoscopic technology right into your living room. Of course, PC gaming is also on the bandwagon as hundreds of games... Not only is "Avatar" the top movie for yet another weekend, it apparently can also help diagnose vision problems.Anyone who has yet to see the movie has probably heard five or six (thousand) times that it's best seen in IMAX or 3-D. Problem is, once they get to the theater, they might not understand what all the fuss is about, because they find they can't see 3-D but never knew.Basically, the 3-D used in movies projects two images onto the screen, one seen by each eye (which is why the 1950s glasses had different-colored lenses, one red, one blue). That's why if you look at the screen without the... Read more...
Some of the most impressive booths at CES 2010 used walls of screens that were spanned and combined to display one scene. The experience is similar to walking into Best Buy and standing in the middle of the TV section while surrounded with LCDs and Plasmas, but perhaps on a grander scale. While companies have been using this tactic for years in order to leave a lasting impression on consumers, gamers are now able to make use of multiple screens in order to maximize the adventure. Without a doubt, multi-panel gaming is the hottest ticket in the enthusiast scene. While ATI's Eyefinity has been... Read more...
