You’ve had a long day at work and have been looking forward to watching the season finale of your favorite show. Problem is, during the middle of the episode, you fell asleep and forgot to set your DVR to record it. Sure, you can wait to watch it on Netflix or wait an eternity until the re-run, but now a wearable wristband called KipstR, in conjunction with a TiVo box, will record whatever you are watching when you fall asleep. The wristband was designed by Ryan Oliver, 15, and Jonathan Kingsley, 14, who attend Manchester Creative Studio and were commissioned by Virgin Media to develop... Read more...
Don't look now, but there will soon be yet another place to get your iPhone fix: Virgin Mobile. As Apple's phone has grown in importance, its availability has spread as well. The initial version was only available on AT&T, and now, hundreds of carriers offer it. On the prepaid side, the roll-out has been a bit slower, but now Virgin is matching the likes of Cricket by offering the iPhone 5 on June 28th. The phone will be available on the carrier's Beyond Talk plans, with unlimited 3G/4G LTE data and messaging starting at $35 per month. Customers can also receive a $5 per-month plan discount... It's a subtle movement, but an important one. Americans are slowly but surely growing tired of the same 'ole politics involving conventional two-year mobile contracts. New flagship phones are hitting the market every six months, but users have to wait 24 months for a discount. And, of course, getting out early results in major sticker shock. Hence, the rebooting of the prepaid / off-contract franchise. What was once small business is now raking in far more customers, and all the while, both the handsets and technologies are improving. Boost Mobile has been offering no-contract wireless to U.S.... Read more...
Ever been on a flight with a TV in the headrest? Sadly, too few planes still have these, but those fortunate enough to see one may have seen some fairly compelling content of late. But evidently, more of that is to come. YouTube has reportedly signed a deal with Virgin America that would see an airline offering YouTube channels for the first time ever. Google's video portal has been striving to turn into a more serious outlet for serious content in the past few years, and this would certainly cement that effort. According to Variety, the airline will make programming on five YouTube channels --... Read more...
On Saturday Virgin America launched its Gogo in-flight wi-fi service, showing it off by filing the press release from 35,000 feet, and with the first ever "air-to-ground" video stream to YouTube Live, YouTube's first official real-world user event. The "fleet" will consist of one wi-fi enabled plane to start, with Virgin saying fleet-wide rollout will be achieved by Q2 2009. In their press release, Virgin America President and CEO David Cush said: "As San Francisco's only hometown airline, we couldn't do less than offer Wi-Fi as a standard option for our tech-savvy guests. With power outlets at... Read more...
The shooting at Virginia Tech is big news, and it's certainly bad enough without the pond scum of the net impersonating charities and swindling you out of your hard earned cash. Information week is running a story that warns users to steer clear of any such emails or other online solicitations: "Security researchers are warning people to be watchful for phishing scams and malware attacks that take advantage of this week's tragedy at Virginia Tech.   U.S.-CERT issued a warning that users and IT managers should be aware that new phishing campaigns generally are launched in the wake of tragedies... In response to the numerous reports of defective laptop batteries that could pose a fire hazard risk, Virgin Atlantic has banned the use of certain laptops from their flights. The ban covers certain Dell and Apple laptops, ones which contain the faulty batteries manufactured by Sony. The laptops are still permitted to be brought on the flight, though people are being asked to remove the battery before boarding the plane. "All seats in Virgin's Upper Class sections are supplied with power sockets allowing travellers in these cabins to... Read more...
