Velocity Micro announced a line of tiny “SmallBlock” desktops that promise performance capabilities that are not commensurate with their size. Most HTPCs have more modest components than your average gaming rig, and they’re typically designed to be quiet and to blend in with a home theater. Enthusiasts who go the HTPC route will often keep a dedicated PC in the media room and keep another set up for serious gaming. CES 2013 is gearing up to be a huge, huge show in terms of quantity of products announced. So much so, in fact, that a number of companies have resorted to talking about their new stash ahead of schedule in order to grab a little more limelight. Netbooks may be fading, but ultralight laptops still have quite a bit of life left in them. As the new year begins, Velocity Micro is refreshing its line of NoteMagix laptops. The 14" Ultrabooks are seeing revisions, with the U430, U450, and U470 also getting internal boosts to bring 'em more in line with what rivals are offering in the here and now. Velocity Micro acquired Overdrive PC a few years ago, and today it relaunched the brand with the Overdrive BigBlock.GTX, a machine designed for high-end performance and looks; indeed, Velocity Micro bills it as an “extreme luxury” system. The BigBlock.GTX is built on an ASUS Rampage Extreme IV motherboard and runs a six-core Intel Core i7 3960X Extreme Edition Processor that has been “Hyperclocked” up to 4.6GHz.
