Microsoft is rolling out a substantial update for the Xbox One and the changes are making a good initial impression on some of the Internet’s best known Xbox gurus. Some improvements, like the change to the Blu-ray player, add new functionality. Others, like the low battery notification icon and the Friends list changes, give you new information that will make your Xbox experience better. And one change removes unnecessary notifications from your activity feed. Nice, eh? Let’s start with the Activity Feed, which is getting a few tweaks in this update. The Activity Feed previously updated... Read more...
If you're still running Windows 7 Release Candidate, you've likely begun to experience bi-hourly shutdowns. Microsoft released the RC in May as a final public test before the RTM build in July. While the RC version has been free to use without restrictions since its release, Microsoft has made it clear that it planned to discontinue the free ride starting March 1. Users who have ignored the regular pop-up warnings that let you know of the RC's expiration will now experience a shutdown every two hours. The shutdowns will continue through June 1, 2010. After June 1, your wallpaper will be removed... Read more...
Though you might not go there as often yet, you soon will.  It's a random sort of babble that sounds mysteriously entertaining at first and then sucks you in like some cheesy sit-com.  What am I speaking of you say? Why the HH Blog Roll of course!  In our recent submissions we discuss things like the new HH Twitter and Facebook pages, that you should all either become a "fan" of or "follow" almost immediately, if not sooner.    And then of course Marco steps up in his RTG with a fleeting glimpse of a new keyboard that just might get you all jazzed - or not, depending... Last week Microsoft had to delay the rollout of Windows XP SP3, and halt automatic distribution of Windows Vista SP1, because of incompatibility issues with Microsoft Dynamic Retail Management System (RMS).  Tuesday Microsoft announced that both Service Packs were again available via Windows Update. The software maker on Tuesday said it is releasing XP Service Pack 3 for Web downloads, and resuming automatic updates to Vista Service Pack 1, after developing a filter that will prevent machines running Dynamics RMS from getting either update. The filter is not a fix for the incompatibility, though... Wednesday, in a post on the Windows Vista Team Blog, Microsoft announced that they had begun automatic distribution of Windows Vista SP1. What this means if that if you have Windows Updates set to automatically download and install on your PC, Windows Update will automatically download SP1 to your PC, after which a few clicks (for the EULA, naturally) will be required for the install to begin.Today, we're happy to announce that we are beginning automatic distribution of SP1 in English, French, German, Spanish, and Japanese. So what does this mean? Over the next few months Microsoft will automatically... Read more...
AMD Updates First Quarter Outlook SUNNYVALE, Calif. – April 7, 2008 – AMD (NYSE: AMD) today announced that it expects revenue for the first quarter ended March 29, 2008 to be approximately $1.5 billion, a 22 percent increase compared to the first quarter of 2007, and down 15 percent compared to the fourth quarter of 2007.  The decrease is due to lower than expected sales across all business segments.  AMD had previously anticipated first quarter revenue to decline in line with seasonality. As with all rumors, please take the following news item with a grain of salt until we can receive official confirmation or denial from AMD.As we've previously reported, AMD is rumored to be shipping their B3 stepping Phenoms, and it seems that we might see 2.5GHz models before April Fool's Day:“AMD is planning to launch B3 stepping quad-core Phenom 9050 series CPUs including 9850, 9750, 9650, 9550 and 9150 within the next 1-2 weeks, however the top-end 9850 will only reach a core frequency of 2.5GHz, instead of the original goal of 2.6Ghz. The company expects to be able to deliver higher core frequencies... Read more...
In early August Microsoft released a pair of performance and compatibility updates. Now they’ve released four (yes, four) more updates as we await Windows Vista SP1.The first, KB941649, addresses “the compatibility, reliability, and stability of Windows Vista.” This type of vague description always makes me feel warm and fuzzy about an OS’s reliability. You can read the full description at the link, but the words “stability” and “reliability” are used a lot. Two interesting fixes are improved stability of wireless network services and shortened startup time. There are three other updates, including... Read more...
This past week, we attended an event where Intel gave us specific detail on the new hardware and features that are part of their vPro platform technology for 2007. If you’re unfamiliar with vPro, it’s not a singular product or chip. Like Centrino for example, vPro is an Intel platform technology that’s comprised of a CPU, chipset, network controller, and proprietary software, that when combined, offer powerful hardware-based security and management capabilities for the enterprise.... It's been less than two months, and already we've seen two iPhone software updates. This second one, like the first, focuses on bug fixes.  Much like the first, there aren't many details available.  This one weighs in at 92MB.It's pretty amazing how Apple continues to do this, as experience has shown that carrier certifications of these types of patches alone can take months.  They must have some kind of leeway with AT&T. Apple on Tuesday updated the software for its iPhone, bringing the most current version to 1.0.2. The update is available when the iPhone is connected to... Read more...
That was fast. Only a day after introducing their new line of aluminum and glass iMacs, Apple has released updates for them. The updates were only vaguely identified as providing "important bug fixes." Owners of the day-old 20-in. and 24-in. iMacs should install iMac Software Update 1.0, Apple said in a terse message accompanying the 5.1MB download, but it didn't spell out the exact fixes. Some users on various Apple-oriented message forums claimed updated ATI video drivers were among the changes, but Apple did not respond when queried for details. As is the norm after a hardware refresh,... AMD Updates First Quarter Outlook SUNNYVALE, Calif. - April 9, 2007 - AMD (NYSE: AMD) today announced it expects to report revenue of approximately $1.225 billion in the quarter ending March 31, 2007. Revenues declined sharply quarter-over-quarter for the Computing Solutions segment, primarily due to lower overall average selling prices and significantly lower unit sales, especially in the resale channel. AMD plans to restructure its business model to increase operational efficiencies and lower its operating cost structure. AMD will reduce 2007 capital expenditures by approximately $500 million,...
