We first laid our hands on the Classified SR-2 at CES 2010 and were recently given the opportunity to take one for a spin around the lab. While preparing to test the board, however, a couple of important points led us in a somewhat different direction than a straight-up motherboard review. The EVGA Classified SR-2’s requirements are unlike any other desktop motherboard you’ve seen to date. And to meet those requirements meant reeling in some other exciting hardware in its own right. On the pages ahead, not only will we be checking out the EVGA Classified SR-2, but we’ll be showcasing... Read more...
Every once in a while a product comes along that really gets us worked into a frenzy. Typically, the latest and greatest processors and graphics cards generate a lot of buzz around here, but some other components aren’t always as enticing for one reason or another, like motherboards for example. Don’t get us wrong, we love a great enthusiast-class motherboard with a ton of features as much as the next guy, but the majority of them just don’t have the appeal of new CPU or GPU. There are exceptions, of course. Most recently, a number of Asus’ RoG, Gigabyte’s Ultra Durable,... Read more...
With Windows 7 slated for either late 2009 or early 2008, those of us foolish enough to buy into Microsoft's hype over Windows Vista Ultimate Extras are probably running out of time in which we might see a really useful Extra come down the pipe. The latest set of underwhelming Extras were released last week, so quietly we sure didn't notice. Microsoft announced them in a blog post on the official Windows Vista blog. The new release includes: Microsoft Tinker: Microsoft Tinker is a casual game that provides players with short puzzle game play sessions set in a warm, calming environment. Ultimate... Read more...

It seems like a new year always evokes the feeling of renewed hope and high expectations.  And for AMD / ATI at least, 2008 appears to have reinvigorated their graphics division, which appears to be firing on all cylinders at the moment.  After a year or so of NVIDIA dominating the high-end graphics space, ATI released the Radeon HD 3870 and HD 3850 cards, which have proved to be competent alternatives at their respective price points.  Based on the RV670 GPU, the HD 38xx series has been able to provide similar or better performance than the preceding... MIT's Nicholas Negroponte has been touting his idea of giving an inexpensive laptop to kids in developing countries. His One Laptop Per Child foundation started out with a per unit target of $50 by 2010, then became widely publicized as the $100 laptop project.  How far have the goalposts moved to date?  Well, you can have one for $188 -- if you buy two and give one away. Negroponte's plan to heal the world with laptops is well-meaning but fundamentally flawed. What good is a laptop in the middle of rural Thailand when electricity, much less Internet access, are spotty at best? Rather... Read more...
Yes, this was a monumental waste of good hardware and the average enthusiast will never have access to the resources necessary to pull something like this off, but the end result is so cool you just have to check this out.  Matt Tovey is an HPC and Storage IT specialist currently living near Munich, Germany.  He recently worked on a project where he had to replace literally hundreds of Itanium processors to build a large super-computer.  Instead of discarding the old processors, as was the original plan, he instead built a custom desk and tiled it with the CPUs...
