We are back with another high-end X99-based motherboard on the test bed. This time around we've got the latest from ASUS, the Sabertooth X99 TUF motherboard, which supports USB 3.1 and sports ASUS' "OC Socket". The first wave of motherboards based on Intel’s X99 chipset launched with attractive features and eye-catching designs. But as time has passed, most motherboard manufacturers have continued to update and optimize their X99-based offerings.  ASUS had already offered some stand-out features in its first salvo of boards. This was largely thanks to the company’s OC Socket used on its X99-based... Read more...
It’s that time of year again folks, and we’ve been getting some previews of the hot new motherboards coming down the pike. We already discussed what Gigabyte has in store, but ASUS gave us the grand tour of their new, extensive lineup of Z97 motherboards. We’re talking the whole socket LGA 1150 schmeer here, from mainstream boards to deluxe models to ROG gaming boards to the TUF and workstation models.    Z97-Deluxe First off, I have to say that ASUS’ deluxe and mainstream motherboards are just about the prettiest I’ve ever seen. Those pewter-ish accents... Read more...
Although there are still details such as specifications and pricing being kept under wraps, ASUS has announced its line of Intel Z87-based motherboards--many of which are sporting the new gold-and-black color scheme. There are a lot of them. The main group of consumer-level boards includes the Z87 Deluxe, Z87 A, Z87 Pro, Z87 Plus, and even a mini ITX board called the Z87I-Deluxe, and there’s a workstation and professional design and content creation mainboard called the Z87 WS. ASUS Z87 WS ASUS has stuck with its Republic of Gamers (ROG) line of motherboards, which maintains the old red-and-black... Read more...
There’s gold in them thar motherboards, or so the saying (sort of) goes. ASUS announced that its upcoming line of Intel Z87-based motherboards will sport a decidedly gold color scheme, from the heatsinks to the DIMM slots. The boards will also feature black PCBs and silver accents. For the record, we’re talking nearly the whole line, including ASUS’ TUF, and WS motherboards, so if you prefer the older blue scheme over the new gold one, you're out of luck unless you roll with an ROG board. ASUS Z87 WS ASUS says that the new “gold imbued” heatsinks actually do offer... Read more...

It's common received knowledge that there was a tech bubble in the late nineties, and then it burst. But what if that wasn't the end of it? What if it was really more like a tech balloon, and it had a pinhole leak? Instead of the pop we thought we heard, perhaps it's was a long slow hissing until we wake up today and realize: Ones and Zeros are not the future; let's make stuff! "The wheel has turned. What was up is down, and what was down is up," said San Francisco investment executive Frank Husic. "And it's all because an emerging world wants to eat, drive and live in houses — things we take for... Read more...

Yesterday Hot Hardware pointed out the Digitimes report on the tight supply of the lowly DVD pick-up head component. Today's version of "we're running out of stuff" includes an assortment of components needed to build notebook computers. Many notebook manufacturers are in danger of missing their targets for sales for 2007, not because of a lack of demand, but because they can't get all the components they need in a timely fashion. All top-three branded notebook suppliers have been impacted. Dell's 8-series consumer notebooks are in short supply, with Taiwan retailer Tsann Kuen still... Read more...
