Generally speaking, the main name in rugged portable computers is Panasonic. Their Toughbook line has long since been viewed as the one-stop shop for a computer that can travel with you yet still withstand the elements. But Getac has been offering similar machines for awhile as well, and their new V100 offers some pretty compelling reasons to look at it over a Toughbook. It all starts with the Core i7 (1.2GHz) processor, which is rarely found in rugged/tough notebooks, and is called the quickest dual-core convertible on the market today. The V100 convertible PC is built like a tank, offering a... Read more...
Tablet PCs may just be approaching the mainstream, but "tablets" in general have been around for years. One sector that never really died out was the rugged tablet, with many working in the field needing a touch-based machine with a chassis that could take a beating. American Industrial Systems (AIS) has been making hardcore tablets for awhile, and the company has an all-new one designed to MIL-STD-810F compliance standard for withstanding shock, drops, vibration, temperature extremes, humidity, dust and water. Pretty tough, huh? The new Ruggedized Military Tablet PC is engineered to last even... Read more...
Never heard of Gorilla Glass? That's a shame, and if we had our druthers, we'd like to see it on every notebook out there. Of course, it's pretty darn expensive, so maybe we'd only like to see it when prices sink down a bit. At any rate, Motion Computing has decided to offer the extremely durable screen on its C5 and F5 tablets, both of which are designed for field use and are apt to come into contact with some pretty rough environments. The C5 and F5 are both within the outfit's "rugged tablet" lineup, and now they can be ordered with Corning glass in order to keep your screen free from breaks... If you're looking to score a rugged notebook, there's hardly a better place to look than in Panasonic's Toughbook line. For years now, the iconic series has led the way in durable computing, with its briefcase-styled rigs able to withstand an intense amount of abuse in the field, on the road and in the wild.Today, Panasonic is taking things one step further by announcing that its fully-rugged line and Toughbook U1 are he first to be certified by an independent third party test lab to meet the newer and more demanding MIL-STD-810G standard for environmental conditions, which was issued in October... If you've found yourself computing more and more outside, you've probably also found yourself struggling to really see what's going on. Most notebook displays, particularly those of the glossy variety, are nearly impossible to see when in direct sunlight, and that's exactly why Duros is adding a daylight-readable panel to its refreshed 8404 rugged tablet. The device, which is also being revamped with an Intel Atom processor, now boasts an 8.4" sunlight-viewable SVGA touchscreen, a solid-aluminum chassis and non-rotating compact flash drive. More specifically, the LED sunlight-viewable display achieves... Read more...
Scouting a new notebook? You may think of the usual suspects--Dell, Acer, Gateway, HP and Asus--but have you even considered Getac? The little-known laptop maker is dishing out a new machine designed for the business crowd, but unlike most business notebooks, this one's designed to handle the bumps and bruises that'll surely happen whilst traveling from office to office. The ultraportable features a 13.3" WXGA display, a Core 2 Duo ULV processor, up to 3GB of memory, a battery that should last up to 8 hours (or so the company claims), a shock-mounted 250GB hard drive, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1 and an... We do our best to protect our cameras, cell phones, MP3 players, and other electronics from extreme weather conditions, drops, force, and water. It makes sense to do so, given that most of these gadgets don’t stand a chance against a bucket of water, accidental drop, or extreme temperatures. Realizing that life brings its fair share of bumps, spills, and accidents, Olympus has launched an entire line of digital cameras that are designed to take a licking and keep on ticking. The Olympus Stylus Tough-8000 is the top model in Olympus' newly renamed "Tough" series of digital cameras that are made to... When you think ThinkPad, what do you think? Plain, classic, traditional, all-business, etc.? Probably, but the word "sturdy" is apt to be throw in that mix as well. Lenovo has made it a point of focus to always ensure that the business-minded ThinkPad line was well equipped to handle dozens of airport transfers, being dropped in airport security lines and enduring the daily stresses of the corporate world. Now, the company is coming out and shouting from the roof tops that its ThinkPads are amongst the toughest in the land -- for "non-rugged" notebooks, anyway. The ThinkPad X200, X301, X200s, X200... It wasn’t that long ago that the loss of a laptop or hard disk containing sensitive information about consumers was big news.  Sadly, it’s becoming much more common these days.  In fact, it’s so common that U.K. Information Commissioner Richard Thomas and his staff have looked into some 6000 complaints. "The roll call of banks, retailers, government departments, public bodies and other organizations which have admitted serious security lapses is frankly horrifying," Richard Thomas wrote in a report. "How can laptops holding details of customer accounts be used away from the office without strong... Read more...
Most of us probably thought it was in the bag when Sony announced many weeks ago that it was going to lower its PS3 prices in order to stay competitive in the gaming market. However, according to Sony’s president, Ryoji Chubachi, it’s not gonna happen. Currently, the PS3 is still over twice as expensive as its rival, the Nintendo Wii, which has recently outsold PS3s 6 to 1 in Japan. This news is somewhat bewildering since the high price tag of the PS3 has been widely cited as its main downfall, and many analysts had predicted that Sony would soon slash prices. The only enlightenment we are offered... Read more...
Power -- It's one of the most important factors for peak system performance and stability. Yet, the PSU is still an often overlooked PC component. While not as sexy as a high-end motherboard, video card or RAM, the power supplying these components is just as important as the components themselves.  With the heightened demands of the latest computing hardware, ample power is an increasingly important consideration for performance and stability. Dual GPU configurations are now commonplace and CPUs are sporting multiple cores, all of which place greater demand on the PSU.  Throw... Read more...
The Toughpower series is Thermaltake's premium line of power supplies, aimed at the enthusiast crowd. With models starting at 600W, they should be able to handle even extreme applications with ease. Over the past few years, the need for a quality power supply has scaled well with the flow of new hardware. With Overclocking is as popular as ever, stable PSUs are in full demand, and here to answer the call is Thermaltake with their new ToughPower series. "Today, I'm looking at Thermaltake's yet to be available ToughPower 550W power supply. You might ask what's the big deal? Let's say you already have a PurePower / PowerStation ~500W model. While the amount of Watts may be enough, your new components may require more stable voltages and higher... Read more...
