There’s a new Xperia phone coming from Sony, the Xperia sola, and it comes packing some interesting features. Most notably, the Xperia sola features “floating touch”, which allows users to navigate the Web browser by hovering a digit about the screen as opposed to actually touching it, creating a sort of cursor-like experience. A physical tap is akin to clicking a link. Sony stated in the press release that it will continue to evolve as new use cases are discovered and devs add to and improve the technology. The phone also sports NFC Xperia SmartTags, little dog tag-like devices... Read more...
Earlier in February a strange case arose over an obscure California law, the Solar Shade Control Act (.PDF), passed in 1979 after the Oil Crisis. The law essentially made criminals out of a pair of Sunnyvale residents, whose eight redwood trees cast shade on a neighbor's solar panels. The dispute between the neighbors, Mark Vargas (solar panel owner) and Richard Treanor and Carolynn Bissett (tree owners) was "settled" when a judge ruled Treanor and Bissett had to cut two of the trees down, despite the fact that the trees pre-dated the solar panels.Let us cast some common sense on this by saying:... Many have modified their Priuses, and one of those possible modifications is a rooftop solar panel system.  It seems that Toyota is considering the same as standard equipment for its own models, but only for high-end models, and only to power the AC. Toyota Motor Corp plans to install solar panels on some Prius hybrids in its next remodelling, responding to growing demand for "green" cars amid record-high oil prices, a source briefed on the matter said on Monday. The panels, supplied by Kyocera Corp would be able to power part of the air-conditioning on high-end versions of the gasoline-electric... Read more...
You don't usually associate IBM with the solar power industry. But IBM researchers couldn't help but notice that one of the main difficulties in compressing the size of a solar collector, in a miniaturization process called "concentrator photovoltaics," (CPV) is the dissipation of heat. IBM used a lens to concentrate sunlight on a one centimeter square solar cell, which yielded 70 watts of usable power -- a record amount. But the heat produced would melt stainless steel. But then again, dissipation of heat from an electronic component is old hat for companies like IBM. The initial results of this... Read more...
Considering solar panels?  How is your relationship with your neighbors?  You might want to look around you and see if any neighbors have trees which may in the future shade your planned panel locations.  Technically, if they eventually do, it will be a crime.Richard Treanor planted the trees in his yard 11 years ago, but neighbor Mark Vargas says they reduce the amount of electricity the panels can generate."Trees do a lot of good," says Richard. "Solar does a lot of good, too.""Some people say they're for solar power, and some people do something about it," says Mark.Vargas says... Read more...
I have a rule of thumb. Whenever I read anything about alternative energy of any kind, I simply skip over everything and look for the one thing that matters: Is it cheaper than oil and coal? Nothing else matters, really. Burning coal and oil to make energy to produce goods and services to tax to redistribute as subsidies to alternative energy producers is a colossal waste of time. I've read thousands of articles about solar power over the years, all missing that essential ingredient. So no one was more surprised than I when I read the following in an article about Nanosolar, a startup in Silicon... Read more...
Today Hi-Tech Wealth Inc., a Chinese company at the forefront of consumer sales and marketing of well-known digital mobile devices, launched the world’s first commercial solar-powered mobile phone, which they call the S116. The S116 integrates Hi-Tech Wealth’s trusted and famous information security technology, a 1.3 MP camera, and supports a T-Flash card. Its advanced technology is protected by 20 patents filed in China. “When exposed to direct sunlight for 60 minutes, the S116 battery allows for 40 minutes of talk time.” Moreover, even in weak lighting conditions such as on overcast days,... IT managers have a lot to say about migrating their business systems onto Microsoft Vista OS. And in the UK at least, nearly half of those surveyed by Vanson Bourne predict that it will require a full year to get everybody on the same OS page. Just three per cent of respondents said they are planning to migrate their corporate systems onto Vista immediately. As well as time, the sheer complexity of migration was cited by 62 per cent of IT managers as putting them off a move to Vista. The research also shows IT staff are concerned about post migration issues such as downtime... Read more...
Do you actually "work" on your computer?  Into that big-iron workstation thing and have most of your projects handled on a Sun box?  All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy as they say, so see what Phoronix has to say about running NVIDIA SLI under Sun's Solaris 10 OS... "Towards the end of December, we had written two articles to examine the frame-rate performance of both ATI and NVIDIA drivers as they had progressed throughout the year under Linux. Although there were minimal average frame-rate differences between each... Read more...
Good morning friends, welcome back to HotHardware.  I am pretty short on time this morning, so we are going to cut the chit-chat to a minimum.  However, this does not mean we are going to skimp on the news... ;)  Corsair TWIN2X1024-5400C4PRO @ Viper Lair "Corsair has earned a reputation as makers of fast and reliable ram, and this tradition continues from past ram formats and into DDR-2. While not earth shattering, performance-wise today, DDR-2 is forward thinking as Intel scales their clock speeds, and the TWIN2X Pro Series is up to the task."  Etymotic ER-6 Isolator... Read more...
