The Elder Scrolls Online got a pair of new videos this week and a lengthy multiplayer demonstration at Quakecon.Buzz around the new MMO has been building steadily for months. Much of what the two trailers show indicates a game that hews closely to Elder Scrolls conventions as well as Skyrim UI standards. There's an onscreen compass at the top of the screen that shows both the direction you're facing and points of interest. Like most modern MMOs, Elder Scrolls Online will also reward exploration and backstory research. Both first and third-person viewpoints will be an option. The Quakecon demo focused... Read more...
If you've somehow managed to miss the long and fun ride known as Skryim, you owe it to yourself to check it out (assuming you're into RPGs). And to make sure you don't miss anything Skyrim has to offer, Bethesda this week announced plans to release The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Legendary Edition, which will include the most up-to-date version of the original game and all three expansions. In addition to the Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn add-ons, the Legendary release will also come with "added features like combat cameras, mounted combat, Legendary difficulty mode for hardcore players, and... Sorry Skyrim fans, but Bethesda is moving on. The game developer announced earlier this week that it would no longer release new content for the popular RPG (long live user mods), as it's been doing for the past year and a half, limiting work on Skyrim to "minor updates" as they're needed. Fans of the game took the news with a heavy heart, though before the tears could dry up, Bethesda took to Twitter to tease its next project, which "requires the studio's full attention to make." Here's the short four-second clip: Moments after Bethesda posted the above Vine video, Jason Bergman, a senior producer... Read more...
It’s time to throw on your best hauberk and head to Tamriel. That’s right, The Elder Scrolls Online is taking names for a public Beta. Gamers who have been debating whether the online fantasy game will live up to the hype will finally have the chance to find out for themselves. What sets The Elder Scrolls Online apart from related Elder Scrolls game is that it’s an MMORPG, in the vein of World of Warcraft. Of course, The Elder Scrolls strives to be different than the MMORPGs already on the market, and it already has one clear structural difference: one server to rule them all.... Read more...
Just the mere mention of the word "Skyrim" is enough to get most avid gamers worked into a frenzy. Mention a next-gen Skyrim combined with proposed release dates, and you may need to call in security to keep the peace. Starting next month, both PC and PlayStation 3 gamers will be treating to Dragonborn, the latest Skyrim add-on. The PC edition will hit on 2/5, and it'll be available on Steam for English, French, Italian, Spanish and German gamers. As for PS3 users? It'll hit the PlayStation Network at some point next month, and reportedly, it'll be half-off during its launch week. What's it mean... Read more...
Yesterday, AMD announced that it would cease offering monthly driver updates, and instead issue Catalyst versions only "when it makes sense." That statement would be a good deal more comforting if it didn't "make sense" to upgrade AMD's drivers nearly every single month. Before we go down that road, we want to acknowledge that AMD's announcement just puts an official company stamp on a de facto situation. From 2010 through 2011, AMD released a new Catalyst driver every month like clock work. Starting last summer, however, AMD began having trouble with high-profile game releases that performed badly,... Read more...

It's only been five months since Skyrim hit store shelves, but the amount of work done on the game by both Bethesda and an army of modders has been enormous. With the Creation Kit now in the wild for several months, we've rounded up some of the best mods available and brought them for your consideration. We'll also walk you through the modding process and how to get started. ProTip: If you re-map the "F" key in Skyrim's key bindings, the new key to assign a favorite is "A." This isn't explained or listed anywhere in game; we found it by accident. What Makes a Mod 'Must-Have? There are literally... Read more...
If you don't mind rolling the dice with beta software and own a GeForce graphics card, NVIDIA has some new drivers that might interest you. The GPU maker released its GeForce 301.24 beta drivers, calling it an "essential upgrade for all GeForce users" since they enable NVIDIA FXAA, NVIDIA Adaptive Sync, and NVIDIA Frame Rate Target on all GeForce 8-series and later GPUs. That's not all. The new drivers introduce new NVIDIA Surround features for all Surround-capable GPUs, improve performance in a number of titles, and add new SLI and 3D Vision profiles. Slaying dragons isn't easy, and if that's your goal in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, you can use all the help you can get. Provided you're rocking a GPU built by Nvidia, new GeForce drivers released today will give you a "game changing performance boost" to work with, up to a whopping 45 percent, according to Nvidia's release notes. Nvidia is basing that off of performance measured with a GeForce GTX 560 at 1080p with Ultra settings in indoor scenes when compared with the previous driver. The new GeForce 295.73 drivers also offer up to two times the performance in Mass Effect 3 with SLI compared... Read more...
With all the recent discussions of future consoles from Sony and Microsoft, we've decided to tackle one of the most significant questions--should future consoles be upgradeable? Historically, console add-ons that boosted the performance of the primary unit haven't done well. Sega's Mega-CD and 32x additions to the original Genesis both failed; Nintendo's attempt to boost the performance of the N64 through the use of a RAM expansion pack saw only a limited amount of success. Any attempt to upgrade a system's core performance risks bifurcating the user base and increases the amount of work developers... Read more...
Bethesda Softworks released a one-two punch today; simultaneously debuting the Skyrim Creation Kit and a surprise -- new, high-resolution textures for its smash hit. The Creation Kit gives modders access to the same tools the game developers use for updating and creating Skyrim. The Creation Kit is integrated into the Steam Workshop--for those of you who missed the announcement a few weeks back, the Workshop is a community/distribution hub for user-created content. Modders working with the Creation Kit will be able to upload their projects to Steam for sharing with other users. As you can see,... Read more...
