Amazon’s Simple Storage Service (S3) is cloud storage at its most strighforward, offering a simple (hence the name) way for individuals and enterprises alike to stash files on Amazon’s massive data centers. Today, Amazon told customers in an email that prices are going down. “With this price change, all Amazon S3 standard storage customers will see a reduction in their storage costs,” said the Amazon S3 Team in the email. “For instance, if you store 50 TB of data on average, you’ll see a 12% reduction in costs. If you store 500 TB of data on average, you’ll... Read more...
Intel continues to flog the ultrabook concept for all its worth, but DigiTimes reports that thus far, sales aren't in line with what OEMs expected. Shipments from Acer and Asus are currently expected to reach 100,000 units each by the end of the year, far short of the initial target of 200-300K units apiece. Part of the problem is reputed to be price—the Taiwanese models currently open at ~$1200, and the cheaper US $1000 option isn't available The report claims that lackluster specs and economic uncertainty have further dampened customer interest, while OEMs are leery of ramping production... Phone maker HTC is taking heat from investors over its decision to purchase S3 Graphics. Citigroup cut its rating on HTC citing corporate governance concerns. There's a definite connection between the two--S3 is partly owned by HTC Chairwoman Cher Wang, a fact that raises concerns over just how necessary the deal was. Normally, HTC might have been expected to simply license S3's technology, as opposed to buying the company outright. HTC has responded to the allegations, telling Bloomberg: "This is a transaction involving related parties, but it’s certainly not the case that we could never... Read more...
VIA announced today that it's signed an agreement to sell its share in S3 Graphics to the mobile phone manufacturer HTC. S3's GPU technology (dubbed Chrome) powers VIA's various chipsets and is paired with the company's Nano processor as part of its CPU platform. Given VIA's relative sliver of market share, this might not seem like an important transaction—but it is. It's been over a decade since S3 was a major player in the graphics display industry; the company's 2D 'Trio' series of video cards were quite popular in the pre-3D era. S3 attempted to enter the 3D market, but the company's... Read more...
VIA Technologies formally announced that its new dual-core, 40nm Nano X2 processors have been released. At present, processors are available to motherboards and OEMs, with systems available in Q1 of 2011. VIA will most likely have at least a few motherboards and notebooks/netbooks on display at CES, but the company has yet to name any major partners for these products. "The VIA Nano X2 processor arrives at a time when software architectures are now optimized for multi-thread computing," commented Richard Brown, VP International Marketing, VIA Technologies, Inc. "Improvements in semi-conductor fabrication... Read more...
S3 Graphics have been making GPUs for longer than you can probably remember. NVIDIA and ATI may get all the attention, but the "Chrome" integrated graphics product is powering a few million devices as we speak. That's pretty monumental, and S3 doesn't show any signs of letting up anytime soon. In an effort to keep on trucking despite being undercover to most of the consumer world, the company has recently unveiled the latest newcomer to the Chrome Series graphics family, the 500E-based eH1. Shown first at ESC 2010, this new graphics solution is designed for road roads, bumpy terrain and rugged... Read more...

If you've got a fever that can only be cured by more hard drive space, Samsung's your doctor. The megacorp has today unveiled two new additions to its S Series external hard drive range over at IFA in Germany, and both go above and beyond the call of duty in terms of capacity. Both the 3.5" 2TB S3 Station and the 640GB 2.5" S2 portable made their debut today on the big stage, with each stepping up their respective games in terms of gigabytes. Jon Peddie Research released its quarterly report on the state of the GPU market today and optimistically forecasts a strong third quarter. The second quarter bucked seasonal trends; sales were up a massive 31.29 percent. That's in contrast to what we typically see in Q2; over the past eight years sales have usually fallen slightly from Q1-Q2, not shot up. Of the big three, Intel and AMD saw their GPU shipments and market shares increase, while NVIDIA's own market share took a 0.5 percent hit. Shipments at all three companies grew by 35.2 percent, 41.5 percent, and 23.6 percent respectively. Every... Read more...
