AMD, has done rather well this year on the energy efficiency charts; its newly launched S10000 GPU powers the second most efficient supercomputer on the planet. That system, dubbed SANAM, is a Saudi Arabian build-out located in the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology. It's capable of 2.35 GFLOPS/watt and built on Intel's Xeon E5-2650 eight-core processors. There's a total of 38,400 cores in the system, alongside... Read more...

It's aimed at server workloads and data center deployments, but it's also the most powerful GPU Sunnyvale has ever deployed, bar none. Rumors of a dual-core Radeon 7990 have floated around since before the HD 7000 series actually debuted, but this is the first time we've seen such a card in the wild. Say hello to the S10000.
