A few years back we attended an Intel IDF event in San Francisco and among other disclosures, behind closed doors, the company was showing off a PCI Express-based SSD with current generation Intel NAND Flash and based on an array of SandForce controllers.  As it turns out, that product never saw the light of day and was more of a demonstration and proof of concept vehicle for Intel than anything else.  We've heard rumblings of Intel PCI Express SSD devices since then but nothing materialized much until very recently when Intel stepped out with a full-fledged product announcement of their... Intel has historically stuck with SATA-based solid state storage solutions, but today the company is taking a difference approach with its first PCI-Express solid state storage device. Like the SSD 710 family of products, the newly announced Intel SSD 910 is based on 25nm MLC NAND Flash. The two product families share a number of other low level features as well, but should offer very different performance levels. With the 710 Series, Intel focused on reliability and enterprise-level endurance and less on speed; the 910 PCI-Express SSD promises to deliver on both fronts... Intel Announces PCI Express... Over the last few months, we have taken a look at a couple of OCZ-built products that leverage the company’s SuperScale Storage Accelerator with VCA (Virtualized Controller Architecture) 2.0. The first product to arrive was the RevoDrive 3 X2, which is a high-end, PCI Express SSD targeted at ultra-enthusiasts and workstation customers. Then came the extreme OCZ Z-Drive R4 PCIe SSD, which caters to the enterprise. The latest OCZ product to hit the lab, the RevoDrive Hybrid also shares these traits, but its flash memory is paired to a 1TB traditional hard drive. With the RevoDrive Hybrid, the... Read more...

If you've been reading the pages of HotHardware for any length of time, you've probably noticed that we have an affinity for just about anything SSD related.  As performance enthusiasts at heart, it's no wonder why we're keenly focused on the market segment, but even so, there are standout products that tend to pique our interest more than others.  And in the burgeoning SSD market, there's nothing more interesting than PCI Express based SSDs. In recent months we've covered PCI Express-based SSDs from virtually all the major players, from Fusion-io to, OCZ and LSI. The last time we... Read more...
In recent months we've covered PCI Express-based SSDs from virtually all the major players, from Fusion-io to, OCZ and LSI.  The last time we took a look at OCZ's offering, the RevoDrive X2 took to the test bench for us and with its MLC-based design, offered much of the performance of significantly more expensive SLC-based PCI Express SSDs, but at a fraction of the cost.  Today the third coming of the RevoDrive from OCZ is upon us, with all new technology on board, from its Flash controllers to the RAID processor.  With read/write specs that will make you drool, the RevoDrive 3 X2... In typical fashion, OCZ had plenty of cool stuff on display in their suite at the Aria Hotel, a few miles away from the hustle and bustle of the Las Vegas Convention Center and CES. As we’ve come to expect from OCZ, a plethora of new solid state storage products on display, along with some new power supplies and other memory products. Among the goodness, OCZ was showing off an updated version of their HSDL (High Speed Data Link) that uses an optical connection between the drive and controller. According to OCZ, the link is capable of data rates of about 20Gb/s. OCZ was also showing off an... Read more...
Asus held a tech seminar over the weekend in which it discussed future product launches, new features, and its plans for the year 2011. We've got information on the four new motherboards Asus is launching to support Intel's upcoming Sandy Bridge. Fans of Asus who are also interested in upgrading when Sandy Bridge drops, will find the below of particular interest. From the top left corner we've got the Asus P8P67 Pro, the P8P67 Deluxe, the Maximus IV Extreme (bottom left) and the Sabertooth 3D (bottom right.) We visually compared the Pro and Deluxe—the Deluxe offers at least one more fan connector,... Read more...
When we looked at the first gen RevoDrive back in August, the thin slab of Flash NAND memory and dual SandForce SSD controllers impressed us and served up performance well ahead of traditional SATA SSDs with a price premium in the 30% range (about $3.07 per GB) versus SATA SSDs.  With the RevoDrive X2, OCZ is double-stacking their product now with four total SandForce 1200 series SSD controllers and double the number of NAND Flash for, you guessed it, up to twice the performance and capacity.  The good news is pricing is actually still going the way of the consumer too.  Journey... What's this, yet another SSD product tap-dancing its way through the HotHardware lab?  It's hard to believe that a product category has so much R&D being poured into it, spurring new releases at such a fevered pitch. The investment in the relatively fledgling storage technology makes perfect sense to us, but the average mainstream consumer probably raises their head to notice only the bigger, more prominent buzz-worthy products hitting the market as of late. There is almost too much in the product category to absorb actually. That being the case, we'd offer... We are back again for the latest episode of the weekly HotHardware Video Podcast. In this week’s episode Dave, Iyaz and Marco give you all a sneak peek of OCZ Technology's upcoming RevoDrive X2 PCI-Express SSD, and they talk about choosing the best mid-range graphics card, Logitech's solar-powered wireless keyboard, and the Microsoft Kinect for the Xbox 360. We also chat about HotHardare's new voting feature and our ongoing contest in which someone can win a killer new gaming, just for helping us name the podcast! Show Notes: 00:13 - OCZ RevoDrive X2 Sneak Peek 03:18 - Mid-Range NVIDIA GPU... Read more...
Last month, we were able to take an early peek at a new, amazing device from the labs of OCZ. Earlier in the year, we found that their RevoDrive PCI-Express-based SSD was one of the fastest desktop storage solutions on the market, but OCZ is always pushing the envelope. And that means leapfrogging their own products quite frequently. The RevoDrive X2 is the follow-up device to the original RevoDrive, and yes, both have debuted in the same year. That's just how quick technology is advancing these days. The new RevoDrive X2 hasn't changed much; it still plugs into a PCIe slot and provides between... Read more...
