It's a topic we cover often because it's near and dear to our hearts. It's battery life, and it's finally starting to get the attention that is has long deserved in the industry. We've seen article after article point out that battery life claims on laptops are flawed in one way or another, and AMD's own Pat Moorhead is stepping forward this week with some facts and figures to back that up. For whatever reason, AMD has taken a strong, vocal stance against shoddy battery life claims. They've had it with PC manufacturers pumping out notebook after notebook with crazy claims, ones that they can't... Read more...

During what's likely the worst recession since the Great Depression, analysts and consumers alike were eager to hear how the tech world's darling made out in the quarter ending June 27th. AMD announced its Q2 2009 results (PDF) today with figures that dashed any hope that the company might have found a rabbit hiding in its hat. AMD reported a loss of 49 cents a share ($330 million), after including some $86 million in revenue the company made selling inventory it wrote off back in the fourth quarter of 2008. Sales were down 13 percent year-on-year, but the microprocessor manufacturer designer managed to trim both its operating loss (down $49 million compared to Q1, to $249 million) and its net loss (down to the aforementioned $330 million from a Q1 high of $416 million). The company's... Read more...
You might not realize this, but Yahoo quietly launched a new way to provide search results last night. This new paradigm is called Yahoo! Glue, is currently in beta in the U.S., and is based on a similar program Yahoo! has already been experimenting with in India for the last few months. If you perform a search on Yahoo! you are not going to see anything different--Yahoo! Glue currently resides on its own standalone site at glue.yahoo.com, and you'll need to perform searches specifically from Yahoo! Glue if you want to see the new search results selections and layout. The focus of Yahoo! Glue is... Read more...
It was about a month ago that NVIDIA released drivers that included PhysX support, leading to multiple allegations of cheating.  Why?  Well, quite naturally the CPU physics test (3DMark Vantage) shows much higher results with PhysX in the mix, as the CPU load moves greatly to the PPU.According to a forum post, Futuremark hasn't been asleep, and has decided any such results will be deemed invalid and removed. I've changed (sic) a couple of e-mails between Futuremark CEO Tero Sarkkinen who quickly commented current confusing situation in ORB and Hall of Fame. NVIDIA's GPU PhysX was launched... Read more...
When checking out the specs on the Voodoo Envy 133 earlier, we were pretty annoyed by the Flash intro to the revamped VoodooPC site. That's precisely the reason for a feature such as this. Search for a site, and - if the site has a Skip Intro link on it - results will have a "Skip intro," which enables users to skip the Flash intro, directly from the search results.Of course, this doesn't help on the VoodooPC site, as there's no "Skip Intro" option on their site. Possibly because the intro is pretty short, but still irritating. This is precisely the type of small, some-would-think inconsequential... Read more...
