There is no way to categorize AMD's recent launch of the RV770 graphics processor powering the Radeon HD 4800 series of cards as anything other than a resounding success. Cards based on the GPU hit the scene offering very strong performance in their respective price brackets, and forced rival NVIDIA to react with a quick round of price cuts that will surely eat into NVIDIA's margins on the gigantic 65nm GT200 chip. Just weeks away from the rumored public debut of AMD's new ATI Radeon 4000-series GPUs, AMD clues us in on a tantalizing tidbit about a key technology found in its next generation graphics cards. AMD's new lineup of graphics cards will not only use Graphics Double Data Rate 5 (GDDR5) memory, but AMD also claims that this will actually be "the first commercial implementation" of the technology. While GDDR4 is still working on becoming the standard for high-end graphics cards, it looks like GDDR5 is already being sampled.  So what is new with GDDR5, well all we have are rumors but a key one is cyclic redundancy checks or CRC.  Perhaps this will turn out to be a sort of 'automatic' throttle for self-overclocking cards.One of the most interesting pieces of speculation is who is getting their hands on early samples:“GPGPU freaks will be spooging over this one - as, apparently, will Intel engineers. Fudo over at The Inquirer reports that ATI will be shipping standard and Crossfire edition variants of their upcoming R580+ GPU with the same operating frequencies. Traditionally, the Crossfire edition master card trailed the flagship level model in terms of frequency. For the first time, owners of the top of the line cards will be able to have two cards running in Crossfire mode with no forced decrease in core speed. Fudo over at the Inquirer reports that he has confirmed with high ranking sources that ATI's refresh of their R580 GPU will remain at 90u and not be fabbed on a smaller 80u process as originally suspected. Apparently, there will be some design changes beyond just higher core and memory frequencies. Although the current R580 core is arguably the fastest GPU on the planet right now, it is also a massive die that produces a significant amount of heat. The rumor mill at The Inquirer is beginning to run at a frantic pace as tidbits of news regarding NVIDIA's 90u flagship GPU begin to make their way around the internet. Fudo reports that NVIDIA's G71 GPU is shaping up to be a very high-frequency part that "should" have no trouble besting ATI's X1900 XTX in the usual group of benchmarks. Obviously, we'll reserve final judgement until we have the cards on our test bench. In October of '05 ATI officially unveiled a new family of graphics cards based on the company's R520 GPU core and its derivatives. With the R520 ATI introduced a new "Ultra-Threaded" architecture, along with their new Ring Bus memory controller, and a more powerful video engine dubbed AVIVO, among numerous other things. Today, we've seen a few interesting bits of news show up on the web concerning ATI's next-generation R580 flagship GPU. The Register reports that Japanese vendors already have the cards on hand and that a note inside the boxes claims some pretty serious power requirements. On its own, a single R580 card requires a 450W PSU with 30A on the 12V rail. When two cards are in a Crossfire configuration, your system will need a power supply with at least 550W and a whopping 38A on the 12V rail.
