It was not too long ago that the web was buzzing with dual-core versus quad-core debates. Sides were taken and lines were drawn. At that time, one of the main arguments against quad-core processors was their high asking price. But as time passed and manufacturing refinements were made, costs steadily decreased and quad-cores found their way into the more mainstream market segments. And before you knew it, a price war was imminent.Intel and AMD have been going at one another for years. With AMD unable to compete well at the ultra high-end of the market, however, their focus shifted towards the mainstream... Read more...
Intel published a new price list on Sunday that reflects large decreases on certain processors including a 40% decrease in price for the Top-end Core 2 Quad Q9650 (12M L2, 3.0GHz, 1333 MHz FSB 45nm) down from December 1,000 unit tray wholesale pricing of $530 to $316.   Although the rumor mill may relate the change in Quad Core prices to the debut of the AMD Phenon II, more than likely it is due in part to Intels release of the Core I7 processor line. Charlie from the Inquirer has snapped off a couple of pictures of wafers that reportedly contain 65nm Quad-Core AMD processor cores. Not much information other than the pictures, but still fun to look at nonetheless... "WHEN AND WHERE will AMD show off its 65 nanometre Rev H cores? How about two minutes ago at the Microsoft Global High Tech Summit in Santa Clara?" Looks like a typical 3.5" x 2" business card in those pictures.  And it looks like approximately 5 1/4 cores span the 3.5" card.  That makes each core about .66" wide, or roughly 16.72mm. 16.72mm squared... [H]ard|OCP had a chat with AMD's CTO Phil Hester about the upcoming K8L Quad Core AMD processor.  Phil gave Kyle and crew some new insight as to just how AMD is looking to handle the newly competitive market served up by Intel's Core 2 Duo. "Phil Hester knows that competition is good for AMD.
