Grim tidings abound at AMD this quarter, confirming some of our worst fears and raising serious questions about the company's ability to continue as a going concern. Revenue for the quarter was $1.27 billion, a decrease of 10% sequentially and 25% year-on-year. The company reported a net loss of $157M and has announced a new restructuring (read: massive layoffs) plan. The company's gross margin plummeted to 31%, down from 45% last quarter. The decline in gross margin was driven by an inventory write-down on the value of the unsold hardware AMD was carrying at the end of Q2. Despite this, AMD's... Read more...
Analyst firm IHS reports that chip supplier inventories have risen for the seven consecutive month. The continued rise in inventories reflects a general belief that consumer demand for electronic products will soon increase, though economic indicators are somewhat sketchy on this point. "Increases in stockpiles during the first quarter reflect efforts by semiconductor suppliers to rebuild inventory for products that were in short supply during the capacity crunch of 2010,” said Sharon Stiefel, analyst for semiconductor intelligence at IHS. “Suppliers also are moving to strategically... AMD announced its second-quarter earnings yesterday and the company's results, while not perfect, imply continued strong execution. The company's revenue was up 40 percent year-on-year on strong demand for server and mobile parts. Total revenue was $1.65B, up five percent from the first quarter. "Robust demand for our latest mobile platforms and solid execution drove record second quarter revenue and a healthy gross margin," said Dirk Meyer, AMD President and CEO. "Our unmatched combination of microprocessor and graphics capabilities resulted in customers launching a record number of new mobile... Read more...
Back when Intel reported its third quarter results for 2009, analysts expressed some concern that the company's strong numbers might not be fully supported by later market analysis. Research firm IDC has recently released data indicating that such concerns were unnecessary—sales in Q3 were up dramatically compared to earlier this year and stronger than is seasonally typical. Sales in Q3 were up 23 percent over Q2, while PC processor revenue grew by 14 percent quarter-on-quarter. Intel was the primary beneficiary of the growth, with an estimated 81.1 percent of world PC processor sales, while AMD... Read more...
According to a report at Fudzilla, AMD/ATI plan to release the follow-up product to R600, the R650 in Q3. The author claims the R650 will be at the heart of the Radeon HD 2950 XTX coupled to 1GB of GDDR4 memory. "ATI hasn't launched the R600 yet and it is already planning its next launch of a die shrinked version. It won't be launching the 1024 MB graphics card until Q3. It plans to launch the R650 chip and brand it as Radeon HD 2950XTX, 1024 MB GDDR4.The chip is called R650 and it is a 65 nanometre core, how convenient. With this new chip ATI might have a fighting chance against the Geforce... Read more...
Hello Everyone!  We're wanted let you all know that we've just posted a new article where we evaluate the features and performance of HIS' Radeon X1950 XT IceQ3 Turbo.  Here's a snip from the piece: "Today, we will be checking out HIS' take on the Radeon X1950 XT, the HIS X1950XT IceQ3 Turbo. As the name implies, the HIS X1950 XT uses the company's IceQ3 cooling apparatus which performs better than the "stock" model and is much quieter to boot. The Turbo in the name also means that the card is guaranteed to overclock to a certain speed, in this case a guaranteed core overclock... Read more...
A few weeks ago, we looked at the HIS Radeon X1950 Pro IceQ3 Turbo, a mainstream graphics card set to do battle with the GeForce 7900GS in the $200 price segment. Based on the RV570 GPU, the X1950 Pro brought a host of features to the table including native CrossFire. While X1950 Pro is a good performer for a great price, some of us were left wishing for more. For a short while, those of us willing to spend an additional $50-$100 for a bit more power than the X1950 Pro could offer had to turn to NVIDIA. That is, until the Radeon X1950 XT was released. Today, we will be checking out HIS' take... Read more...
Hello Everyone. We're just writing to let you all know that we've posted a new article where we evaluate the features and performance of HIS' Radeon X1950 Pro IceQ3 Turbo. Here's a snip from the piece: "Today, we will be looking at HIS' take on ATI's mid-range beast, the Radeon X1950 Pro IceQ3 Turbo. This card comes with higher core and memory speeds than the original specs call for, and it sports a large heatsink/fan designed by Arctic Cooling." Read The Rest Right Here.... Read more...
ATI made quite a splash a few weeks ago, with the introduction of the Radeon X1950 Pro. The RV570 GPU at the heart of the X1950 card is manufactured on TSMC's 80nm node. It's equipped with 36 pixel shader processors, 8 vertex shader units and 12 texture units. ATI's reference design calls for a 575MHz GPU clock and with 1.38GHz memory, but the card we'll be featuring here today is clocked quite a bit higher than this. The most interesting feature of the Radeon X1950 Pro, however, is Native CrossFire support. ATI has done away with the "Master" and "Slave"... Read more...
As power users, we'd all love to own one, or perhaps even two, of today's latest and greatest graphics cards. But wanting to own the best and having the means to do so are two totally different things.  Lucky for us, there are usually a multitude of products that fall in just behind the top-of-the-line that tend to offer similar features and only marginally lower performance for a more palatable price. The product we'll be looking at today, the HIS Radeon X1900 XT IceQ3, falls into this category. As its name implies, the HIS Radeon X1900 XT IceQ3 is powered by ATI's X1900 XT... Read more...
Nested within a story on DigiTimes which covered the financial aspect of the last few months in the motherboard industry, there is a blurb regarding the launch of Intel's Conroe CPU. Apparently, motherboard vendors are looking towards a launch in the third quarter meaning that Intel would likely have a healthy performance advantage over AMD until they release their new architecture in the first half of 2007. According to sources at motherboard makers, Intel is scheduled to roll out the E6000 family of processors (codenamed Conroe) - the E6300 at US$209, E6400 at US$241, E6600 at US$316... Read more...
