E3 is well underway in Los Angeles, and Microsoft has already made a major splash with its "SmartGlass" technology, game demos, and its announcement that a Kinect-powered version of Internet Explorer will debut on the Xbox 360. This is a marked change from last year, when Kinect was the unquestioned centerpiece of Microsoft's display and the company's demos focused on how Kinect-powered games used your full body as a controller. This year, the biggest titles being shown, like Splinter Cell: Blacklist, FIFA 13, and Madden 13, have focused their implementations on adding voice control, giving players... Read more...
Microsoft's Kinect (formerly Project Natal) motion control system launches today into a market that's just recently seen the debut of the PlayStation Move. Prior to now, there's been some discussion of whether or not the XBox 360's CPU could handle both Kinect and the demands of modern games; CPU usage in Kinect-capable software was claimed to be in the 10-15 percent range. According to Alex Kipman, Microsoft's incubation director and the brains behind Kinect, the company has managed to reduce the motion controller's demand for cycles down to single digits. According to Kipman, Microsoft gamers... Read more...
It's been a few years since Microsoft paid much attention to the PC gaming industry, but someone apparently wandered past the sole employee in the PC gaming devision and kicked him a few times. With Halo Reach released and Kinect in the launch tube, MS has announced it wants to "push the business model into new directions." The problem, according to the software giant, is that it isn't seen as the industry leader or trendsetter that it wants to be. Hi everyone, this is Steve from our Windows Gaming Division. There’s been a fair bit of criticism aimed at Microsoft that we were spending a lot... Read more...
In a recent interview, Kinect creator Kudo Tsunoda shared his thoughts on Microsoft's new gaming platform and the future of gaming in general. when asked how Kinect would be integrated into future titles he described the rise of FPS shooters for consoles, then drops this bombshell. "Halo did an awesome job of building a first-person shooter exclusively for the console, and now hardly anyone plays first person shooters on the PC anymore. It’s all about the console." This is precisely the sort of statement that normally causes PC gamers to rally round the flagpole, declare their undying devotion... Read more...
The world has known that Microsoft was bringing a motion control system to market for months and months now. We've heard it referred to as "Project Natal" for as long as we can remember, and we were assuming that the company would simply retain the name after all of this time. We should have known better. As E3 begins in California this morning, Microsoft is making that motion system official, and it will go by the name "Kinect." It's impossible to see this name and not think of the Kin, a new feature phone line recently launched by none other than Microsoft. Whether or not the two are connected... Read more...
Microsoft's Project Natal might change gaming as we know it when it launches this holiday season, much like Nintendo's Wii did just a few years back. There's no question that a lot of technology has been involved in creating a system that could actually recognize human movements and transform them into console commands, and now PrimeSense is coming clean and saying that some of what makes Natal tick is due to their technology. This marks the first time that Microsoft has gone public about any of the technology beneath Natal, and now we know that the 3D sensing behind it is thanks to a technology... The hardware specifications for the components in the XBox 360 or Playstation 3 may not have changed since launch day, but semiconductor manufacturing has advanced significantly. Supposedly leaked photos of a new XBox 360 motherboard indicate that Microsoft could be poised to take advantage of that fact. If the image is real (and it might not be), Microsoft has redesigned the XBox's motherboard from the ground up. Image by Kotaku.comAbove we have the leaked photo, below we have the XBox 360 motherboard as its more-or-less appeared to date. The major difference between the two is the position of... Read more...
It wasn't supposed to happen this way. Back when all three consoles were just spec sheets and demo units it was Microsoft vs. Sony and Blu-ray vs. HD DVD. Even the pundits who thought the Wii's motion control interface could win it market share weren't predicting that the modest device would prove as popular as the XBox and PS3 combined. Both Microsoft and Sony realized some time back that the Wiimote wasn't just a fad and adjusted their plans accordingly. Microsoft has been hard at work on Project Natal, while Sony has finally taken the wraps off its own controller dubbed the Playstation Move.... Read more...
Check monthly console sales from the XBox's launch in 2005 to the present day, and Sony's PS3 lags both the XBox 360 and the Wii. According to the most recent data available, Sony has sold 33.5 million PS3's, Microsoft is at 39 million XBox 360s, and Nintendo has moved 67.45 million Wiis. It comes as something of a surprise, then, to hear Dave Mercer, an analyst with Strategy Analytics Connected Home Devices, predicting that Sony's PS3 will ultimately outsell the Wii over its lifetime. Mercer predicts sales of 103 million units for the Wii compared to 127 million for the PS3."Nintendo has done... Read more...
