We're starting to think that if a nuclear war breaks out or an asteroid the size of Texas rams into our planet, all that will be left in the aftermath are cockroaches and BlackBerry. Maybe just BlackBerry. Like Rocky Balboa, BlackBerry has taken beating after beating, yet it's still standing, and believe it or not, it's even making a profit. Well, for this past quarter, anyway. After posting losses of $148 million and $207 million during the company's fiscal third and second quarters of 2015, respectively, BlackBerry somehow managed to get back in the black and come out $28 million ahead in the... Samsung's quarterly operating profit is headed for a cliff and there's nothing the South Korean electronics giant can do about it at this point. After two consecutive quarters of annual declines in global smartphone share, Samsung stated in a regulatory filing that it expects a 59.65 percent drop to 4.1 trillion won (around $3.8 billion) in operating profit for the third quarter. That's the lowest it will have been in more than three years, and it's largely due to Chinese manufacturers producing cheaper smartphones that ultimately cut into the company's bottom line, along with expensive ads. "Smartphone... Read more...
When you're on a roll, there's really one two places to go: ahead, or slipping back. Apple did a bit of both with its latest earnings report. While the company proudly proclaimed that Q1 2013 was one for the record books, Wall Street wasn't entirely thrilled. That said, Apple's Q1 2013 did have one fewer week than Q1 2012, so it's tough to compare year-over-year numbers with those lost days in the mix. At any rate, Apple's latest report showed record quarterly revenue of $54.5 billion and record quarterly net profit of $13.1 billion, but oddly, neither of those figures measured up to Wall Street's... Despite all the lawsuits with Apple and bickering over patent claims, injunctions, and all the other behind the scenes drama, Samsung has hit its stride, posting record quarterly operating profit of 5.8 trillion won ($5.13 billion in United States currency). That's up from 2.95 trillion won ($2.6 billion) from one year ago, and up from 5.3 trillion won ($4.7 billion) from last quarter. Lee Ka-keun, an analyst at Hana Daetoo Securities, tells The New York Times that Samsung and Apple are about to "engage in a full-fledged war," with Samsung planning to launch its new Galaxy S smartphone in the second... You have to hand it to HTC, the handset maker who has found a way to be profitable by bombarding mobile phone market with a near-endless stream of smartphone models. The strategy is paying off, and quite handsomely -- HTC on Tuesday said its second quarter net profit jumped by 33 percent, The Wall Street Journal reports. It's nothing but obscene numbers across the board. Take revenue, for example, which ballooned by 58 percent in the second quarter, rising from NT$38.20 billion to a record NT$60.35 billion. "HTC's second-quarter earnings results is better than its original second-quarter guidance,... Read more...
Mark this one down--it hasn't happened in a long, long time. But frankly, we're hoping it's a sign of things to come, and the real turnaround that AMD needs to seriously rival Intel and drive prices down as a whole in the microchip sector. Competition is always great, so we'd encourage you to put your fanboy suit aside and actually consider just how remarkable this is for every PC enthusiast. AMD has just posted a profit for the quarter, which is its first in three years. Now, we should point out that the most likely reason that said profit was posted is Intel. We know you're probably scratching... Read more...
We knew the first quarter of 2009 wouldn't be fantastic for chip makers. Frankly, so did they. But somehow or another, Intel managed to escape the vicious first three months of the year with quite a few dollars in its pocket, which -- in our opinion -- deserves applause in its own right given the circumstances. The company's Q1 2009 filings show that it ended the quarter with a net profit of $647 million -- a figure that some outfits would do anything to reach during these tumultuous times. That said, it was still an 11% drop year-over-year, which some investors figured would be less drastic. Potentially... Read more...
It must be really cold outside, because something just froze over.  It appears the Xbox has managed to turn a profit. In the last six years, there's been one constant when discussing Microsoft's foray into the strange and seductive world of video game console manufacturing: they had yet to turn a profit on any of it. No more, with today's announcement of Microsoft's second quarter earnings which showed a relatively impressive six-month income of $524 million (compared to a $423m loss during the same period last year) from the the Xbox's Entertainment and Devices Division. Before you go thinking... Universities and research institutes routinely need to swap huge amounts of information. Many of them have relied on two non-profit Internet networks, Internet2 and National LambdaRail, to supply them with the dedicated superfast network connections they require.  Talks aimed at merging the two have been sporadically attempted. The latest round of negotiations has fallen apart again, and it appears the idea is dead now. What would non-profits who serve essentially the same users with the same service fight about, anyway?  Money.Talks resumed this year, and a committee with top leaders... Read more...
Much as their search market share has increased, so has the amount of money in Google's coffers. Third-quarter net income rose to $1.07 billion, or $3.38 per diluted share, compared with the year-earlier quarter's $733.3 million, or $2.36 per diluted share. Excluding one-time items, profit was $3.91 per share in the latest quarter. Gross revenue rose 57 percent to $4.23 billion. Google's stock rose to $645.18 in aftermarket trading.  How much higher can this stock go?  Berkshire Hathaway is starting to take notice.... Read more...
