Researchers at Princeton University recently showed off a 25-core processor they designed specifically for data centers. It's called "Piton," named after the metal spikes rock climbers hammer into cracks or seams of mountainsides to anchor their position, and it's built after a scalable architecture that could boost processing speed while cutting back energy use. We're getting so close to AMD's release of Zen that it almost feels like you can reach out and grab it, though obviously that's not the case, at least not yet. During a recent earnings call with investors, AMD boss Dr. Lisa Su stated that Zen would trickle out by the end of the year before shipping in any kind of real volume in the first quarter of 2017. Intel shook things up when it announced that Kaby Lake would sit in between Skylake and Cannonlake, thus disrupting its tick-tock release cadence with a third generation processor family based on a 14nm manufacturing process. Now it appears that a fourth generation family of 14nm CPUs is on the roadmap, that being Coffee Lake, which will be behind Intel's first six-core processor for mainstream users. Apparently this is the season of leaked slides, at least for Intel, which seems to having trouble keeping inside information under wraps. A bunch of researchers at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of California, Davis (UC Davis) have built a "many-core" processor unlike any other. Aptly named KiloCore, the new CPU contains a staggering 1,000 independent programmable processors, which is presumably the first of its kind."To the best of our knowledge, it is the world's first 1,000-processor chip and it is the highest clock-rate processor ever designed in a university," said Bevan Baas, professor of electrical and computer engineering.Baas led the team that designed the chip architecture. When Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) introduced its Bulldozer architecture, it talked about the design being a "third-way" approach between symmetric multithreading (SMT), like Intel's Hyper Threading, and true multi-core processing where multiple discrete cores reside on a single die. Now AMD will have to defend its design and the way it was marketed because of a class-action lawsuit.The lawsuit, filed by Tom Dickey in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, San Jose Division, alleges that AMD deceived customers by overstating the number of cores on its Bulldozer processors.... Intel has refreshed its line-up of processors in a number of categories over the last few months. Late last year, Intel’s current flagship desktop processors based on Haswell-E arrived, followed shortly thereafter by the low-power Core M series for ultra-mobile devices, and then 5th Generation Core processors for notebooks and all-in-ones. We know that many manufacturers are refreshing their chromebooks soon as Intel is pushing its Bay Trail-M SoC and Intel Core i3 (Haswell) chips, and you can count Acer among those companies. Acer announced that it will have two new SKUs in its chromebook stable, both of which will run on Intel Core i3-4005U (1.7GHz) chips. It’s intriguing that a new spate of chromebooks are getting actual Core series chips--Acer won’t be the only one--but it begs a couple of questions. There’s a little mess of wires and solder that started it all--the world’s first microchip for which its creator, Jack Kilby of Texas Instruments, eventually won the Nobel Prize in physics. And although at auction, the thing stirred up bids as high as $850,000, it failed to reach the reserve bid nor hit the $1 million to $2 million range expected by auction house Christie’s. According to AMD, there are 3 billion personal computers worldwide and some 30 million servers, and they consume approximately 1% and 1.5% of all energy consumed annually. The cost for all that juice is between $14-$18 billion, and the company believes it can do better--25 times better, actually. AMD is planning to increase the efficiency of its APUs by a factor of 25 by the year 2020. “Through APU architectural enhancements and intelligent power efficient techniques, our customers can expect to see us dramatically improve the energy efficiency of our processors during the next several years,”...
