If you live in the United States, chances are that you don't think much about the prices other people pay for US products. Everyone is generally aware of the exchange rate, so it's logical to assume that a game, PC, or other product costs the same here as it does in England or Australia, save for shipping costs and taxes. It might surprise you, therefore, to learn that companies like Microsoft and Adobe make huge profits off foreign customers by drastically inflating prices well beyond their US equivalents. Sixty years ago, there was some logic as to why a product made in America would cost more... Read more...
T-Mobile has a major press event scheduled for this coming Tuesday, and if you wanted a clue at what the carrier may be revealing, take a look at this. The so-called "UNcarrier" has revealed some new pricing plans early, and they're actually fairly compelling coming from a postpaid network operator. The company, which is set to merge with MetroPCS in the coming months, has been on a rampage of late, attempting to boast about its lack of restrictions and competitive pricing compared to the likes of AT&T. Humorously, T-Mobile and AT&T were set to merge as well not too long ago, but since... Read more...
Ever since Microsoft unveiled its upcoming Surface tablet but kept the pricing details under wraps, speculation about the final price tags for the devices has been rampant. However, there’s been precious little in the way of clues, save for some rumors that at least one model of the Surface will hit the sub-$200 price point. In an interview with the Seattle Times, however, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer dropped some clues as to the tablets’ pricing. Here’s the bit where he responds to a question about whether the Surface will compete against the iPad on price or features: We haven't... Read more...
It’s the morning after throngs of people pre-ordered Apple’s new third-generation iPad (some models are apparently already temporarily sold out), and for those who made the purchase in a euphoric swoon, the dopamine fog is lifting and the reality is setting in that there’s a price tag for that blazing fast 4G LTE. In the U.S., the cheapest plan is 250MB per month from AT&T for $14.99; Verizon’s least expensive plan is $20 per month for 1GB. On the high end, $50 per month gets you 5GB with either carrier. The good news is that you don’t need a contract to get the... Read more...
It's an argument that has been around for almost as long as Macs have been rivaling PCs. And despite the fact that so much has changed over the past few decades, the argument still arises almost every time Apple introduces a new computer. No, it's not the argument of "PC versus Mac" from a software and compatibility standpoint; that's an entirely different animal worthy of its own analysis. This is an argument over dollars and cents. For years, PC loyalists (or just those who are anti-Apple for one reason or another) have argued that Apple computers are more expensive than their similarly equipped,... Read more...

On April 7th, iTunes went 100% DRM-free, but at the same time Apple introduced tiered pricing. And therein lies the crux of this new lawsuit against Apple. Daniel and Barbara Owens of Illinois have filed a class action lawsuit against Apple. The couple has purchased "numerous" iTunes gift cards over the years, but in this case the gift cards were bought on March 1 from Sam's Club and on May 19 from Wal-Mart. Here's what the lawsuit says, in part: The above-mentioned 99¢ iTunes cards that were purchased on March 1, 2008 from a Sam’s Club in O’Fallon, Illinois both state: “Download $25 worth... There hasn't been much love lost between NBC Universal and Apple, especially in the wake of the PR battle that recently took place when NBC announced they were not renewing their contract to have their programming available via iTunes after their current contract is up.  Whatever the true reason for that particular decision, it seems that the PR battle is continuing, this time with NBC Chief Exec Jeff Zucker claiming that Apple destroyed music pricing as we know/knew it."We know that Apple has destroyed the music business -- in terms of pricing -- and if we don’t take control, they’ll do the...
