It was a question that a lot of people were asking, and now there's an answer. Amazon recently reduced the price of their traditional Kindle to under $200, but the large screen Kindle DX remained at its original price point. Of course, there aren't as many direct competitors to the Kindle DX, but still, the gap was growing noticeably large. Now, the company has remedied that problem, and even went a step further by revising the entire device with slightly better specifications. A price drop and improved specs? That's a two-fer we can live with. The Kindle DX was originally intended to be used as... Read more...
Good news for text messaging teens enamored with Microsoft's Kin phones. Verizon has gone and slashed the prices on both the Kin One and Kin Two, making it easier for social networking addicts to save some of their allowance for the real important things, like Justin Bieber concert tickets. As it turns out, Verizon has had trouble moving the Kin phones off of store shelves, perhaps because everyone has been paying attention to that other smartphone that was recently launched (a little thing called the iPhone 4). Or maybe tweens and social networking hipsters aren't the best demographics for a smartphone.... Read more...
Sony lowered the bar with its $299.99 PlayStation 3 slim, and Microsoft followed up with a $100 price cut (and now a $50 rebate on top of that) on its Xbox 360 Elite. And with the holiday season quickly approaching, Nintendo knew it had to do something. In an effort to not be left behind in the latest round of console price cuts, Nintendo has decided to drop the MSRP of the hot selling Wii by $50. For nearly three full years, the Wii has sold (like crazy) for $249.99. Most stores couldn't even keep them in stock at that point, so up until now, Nintendo really hasn't seen a need to lower the barrier... Read more...
For the longest time, we've felt that Sony's baseline $399 price tag on its PlayStation 3 console was simply too high. Nintendo's Wii is just $299, and Microsoft's Xbox 360 can be had easily for $199. Aside from Blu-ray playback, what does the console really offer to persuade gamers to purchase it over the other, cheaper options?Obviously, we aren't the only ones wondering why a PS3 price drop wasn't announced recently at E3, with major game developer Activision even wondering if it will continue to support the console in the near future. Specifically, Activision Blizzard Chief Executive Bobby... Read more...
It looks like the news we broke last week regarding GeForce GTX 200 series pricing has already taken effect at a couple of on-line retailers.  We just did a quick search at NewEgg and found that a handful of GeForce GTX 260 cards are priced between $299 and $339, which puts them right about on-par with the roughly $310 Radeon HD 4870.  Although, the least expensive of the bunch (MSI's $299 GeForce GTX 260) appears to have already sold out. Many GeForce GTX 280 cards have also dropped in price too.  As you can see here, the $499 we quoted last week was right on the money, and a number... Over the last couple of days, there have been some rumblings around the web that NVIDIA is planning to drop the price of their recently launched GeForce GTX 260 and GTX 280 cards in response to AMD's potent, and more affordable, Radeon HD 4800 series.  The actual numbers quoted have varied, but today we heard some news directly from multiple NVIDIA board partners that pricing on the GeForce GTX 280 may actually be dropping to as low as $499--a significant drop from the $649 launch price. Unfortunately, we were unable to confirm a price for the GTX 260, but we suspect it will hover somewhere... Read more...
While the PS3 isn't exactly a computer, it is still a very interesting piece of hardware that might just be a look at the future of slim computing devices if Toshiba (new owners of the Cell technology) and company have anything to say about it.  It also is one of the best pieces of equipment to run folding@home on, and there's probably not a better way to justify the purchase of a PS3 than to fold (remember, HH is team 32407).So far one of the biggest problems with the PS3 has been its price, which is substantially higher than the Nintendo Wii and marginally higher than the Xbox 360. ... Zune took a price drop this week, losing $50 of its original $249 price.  On the official Microsoft Zune blog, it was dismissed in little more than a paragraph.  Coincidental that this happened so close to this week's Apple press event?  You decide. Some of you may have already heard, but tomorrow we’re dropping the suggested retail price for Zune to $199.  It’s part of the normal product lifecycle, something we’ve had on the books for months. Months, eh?  Wink, wink.  Yes, yes, it could just be a coincidence.  Or perhaps a way to clear out some inventory before a Zune II?... Read more...
