Father's Day is just around the corner, and if pops is a gamer, Best Buy has an offer that you might find is too good to refuse. It involves wiping the dust off your PlayStation 3 Slim or Xbox 360 250GB console, grabbing the power cable, and making sure it fires up. If so, you can trade in either of those consoles and receive $175 towards an Xbox One console. That slashes the price of an Xbox One in half, provided you're opting for a 500GB model. For example, Best Buy currently sells a special white edition of the Xbox One with 500GB hard drive and Halo: The Master Chief Collection... Read more...
Sony is all about pushing as many PlayStation 4 consoles into homes as it can, but at the same time, it hasn't forgotten about owners of the previous generation PlayStation 3 system. Beginning May 12 (next Tuesday), Sony's cloud-based PlayStation Now service will be available on the older console with a free 7-day trial for new subscribers. PlayStation Now gives gamers access to a growing library of more than 100 PS3 games, which was previously made available to PS4 owners, along with select Sony-brand Blu-ray players and TVs. The service lets you rent most games -- prices vary by title, starting... Read more...
Here's a bit of good news if, for whatever reason, you're hoping to use your PlayStation 4 (PS4) controller wirelessly with your PlayStation 3 (PS3) console. Courtesy of a recent firmware update Sony rolled out, it's now possible to pair the new controller with the previous generation game system using Bluetooth technology. The functionality became public knowledge from a Reddit forum thread discussing the topic. Since it's through Bluetooth, you need to head into your PS3's Settings menu and have it search for devices. Here are the steps: Go to "Accessory Settings" and select "Manage Bluetooth... Read more...
When Sony bought the Gaikai streaming service and announced it was building custom PlayStation 3 boards to drop into servers for its PlayStation Now game service, a lot of folks got excited by the potential. This type of service delivery could mark the future of gaming, make backwards compatibility a non-issue, and in the long run, completely transform the console business.  Over the long run, a game console might function more as a media and control hub than a standalone rendering machine -- and Sony seemed to have their finger on the idea much more firmly than Microsoft, which was off chasing... Calling all PlayStation 3 owners, if you're wiling to "ditch" your PS3, Microsoft will give you $100 of store credit for it at the Microsoft Store, which you can then apply towards the purchase of an Xbox One console. The promotion effectively eliminates the price difference between a PlayStation 4 (PS4) and Xbox One and could help tilt gamers who are on the fence in Microsoft's favor. Microsoft's trade-in offer is available at select Microsoft Stores in the U.S. (including Puerto Rico) and Canada; it's not valid online. In addition to accepting PS3 consoles, Microsoft's promotion also includes... Read more...
Here's a PSA to PlayStation 3 parents -- keep your gamer children hydrated and fed, and force them to get a bit of exercise and sleep every once in awhile. This will be super important advice come December 18 (this Wednesday) because that's when the highly addictive indie building game known as Minecraft will land on the PS3. Owen Hill from Mojang made the announcement on Sony's PlayStation Europe blog, adding that over 30 million copies of Minecraft have been sold to date. Expect that number to skyrocket once the PS3 Edition arrives, followed by Minecraft: PlayStation 4 Edition and Minecraft:... Read more...
Bungie's Destiny is a new FPS/RPG hybrid set in the distant future, in the aftermath of an apocalyptic series of events that reshaped human civilization and destroyed an empire that spanned the solar system. The company has kept much of its development under wraps, sketching out tidbits of information on the various character classes and enemies, but generally keeping everything close to the chest. Now, the company has released new gameplay footage -- and declared that PS4 and PS3 owners will be the first to beta test the title. Bungie has previously said that Destiny will be a living world, meaning... Read more...
With just over a week to go before Sony officially joins the next generation console wars, the hardware company announced that it has sold 80 million PlayStation 3 systems, while making sure to point out that it took 7 years to do it. That's a bit of a jab at Microsoft, which recently announced reaching the 80 million units sold milestone for its Xbox 360, though Microsoft's console debuted a year earlier than the PS3. Sony isn't likely to catch up to the Xbox 360 in console sales before the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One come out, but it's been such a close race, you might as well call it a tie. Meanwhile,... It might have been released over two-years-ago, and is said to be the final game in the current series, but this weekend, Capcom announced that there's still more love coming to Super Street Fighter IV. The announcement took place at the ongoing Evolution Championship Series tournament in Las Vegas, where gamers have been strutting their stuff in Street Fighter X Tekken, Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Mortal Kombat and Persona 4 Arena. Not surprisingly, the upcoming DLC will rebalance much of the roster (full details can be found at the article linked-to below). In addition, six stages are being... Read more...
Sony last week issued and then quickly pulled a firmware update for the PlayStation 3 after a flurry of complaints surfacing claiming the new software was bricking their consoles. Oops! Making good on its promise to investigate the issue and come up with a fix, Sony announced another firmware update to both repair the bricked consoles and introduce upgrades that were supposed to be sent out via last week's firmware. If you tried installing last week's firmware (version 4.45) and can no longer see the XMB (XrossMediaBar) menu, Sony says you must perform the update to version 4.46 by starting the... Read more...
Woe is the PlayStation 3 gamer who jumped at the chance to install Sony's newest firmware update, version 4.45. After it was made available, it didn't take long for complaints to surface on Twitter, Reddit, and Sony's own support forum lamenting the fact that the update was bricking consoles, turning their gaming boxes into very expensive paperweights. Sony has since rolled back the firmware to the previous version (4.41) released in April as it looks into what went wrong. "Hi guys, we're aware of reports that the recent PS3 update (4.45) has caused. We have temporarily taken 4.45 offline and are... Read more...
Grab your racing gloves and get ready for the newest installment of Sony's popular Gran Turismo series, the best-selling franchise across all PlayStation consoles. Sony announced that Gran Turismo 6 will skid into view this holiday season for the PlayStation 3, though curiously missing is an explicit confirmation that it will also be available for the PS4, which is also do out by the end of the year. PS3 gamers will be treated to new tracks and cars, along with a revised user interface. According to Sony, it will be a "compact" title with downloadable content (DLC) to follow. "It is amazing to... For Netflix users, there's hardly a better way to stream content than on Microsoft's Xbox 360. The user interface is fluid, and the console itself is plenty powerful to churn through the HD streams. But Sony's PlayStation 3 offers a similarly excellent experience -- one that's getting better as of today. Netflix admits that the PS3 is one of the "most popular ways" that its users consume TV and movies. With the new Player for PS3 update, you'll notice an updated design that is more consistent with the Netflix player on the Web as well as the company's mobile and tablet applications. The key feature... Read more...
Were you aware that game consoles are banned in China? Due to fears that these devices could harm the physical and mental development of children, seven Chinese ministries decided to ban the manufacture, sale, and import of game consoles a little over a decade ago. Now authorities in Beijing are starting to rethink things. Citing an anonymous government source, China Daily reports that China is warming to the idea of lifting the ban on game consoles, which would open up a potentially massive market for Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo to tap into. "We are reviewing the policy and have conducted some... Read more...
