Earlier this year, Pandigital announced a firmware upgrade for its 7-inch Pandigital Novel line of products that transformed the eReaders into full Android tablets. Although the Pandigital Multimedia Novel 7-inch Android tablet doesn't have the same powerful processor or specs as some of the other tablets we've reviewed recently, its low price ($199.99 MSRP, street prices as low as $140 at the time of this writing), will certainly capture the attention of users who are looking for an eReader with added functionality for an affordable price... Novel Concepts introduced a new heat sink that it is calling the “world’s thinnest air-cooled heat sink.” The new ThinSink is thinner than a credit card. It is capable of cooling 25 times more heat per cubic centimeter than today's best microprocessor heat sinks. ThinSink was designed to fit inside small electronic devices, particularly notebooks, monitors, and tablets. Keeping in mind that power is limited on these mobile electronic devices, Novel Concepts has designed the ThinSink to consume only 0.031 watts of electricity (up to 2 days on an AAA battery). Last we heard from Pandigital, the company was busy finishing up on a new connected digital photo frame designed to work with AT&T. But that was back at CES, and a lot of time has passed since then. Today, the company is venturing into another product sector, one that's crowded from top to bottom but still expanding rapidly thanks to the tablet revolution that has occurred this year. Yes, we're talking about the e-reader market, and Pandigital is hoping to bypass the need for E-Ink by relying instead on an LCD display. With all of the recent Sony battery problems, this just might be a step in the right direction. Battery technology is slow to advance, Lithium Ion having only quadrupled since its introduction 15 years ago. The new battery seems to have the support of many OEMs and Texas Instruments is already producing and delivering charge circuits for it. Boston-Power came out of stealth mode today (Nov. 6) to say it has garnered $8 million in first-round venture financing. The startup plans to deliver a novel lithium ion battery for notebook computers in the... Read more...
Is this a good or bad development for Microsoft? Novell? Linux? Certainly it is a power grab for Microsoft. After years of discounting open-source alternatives, Microsoft finally admits Linux is not only for real, but that they need to work with it. And what better way than to align with one of the top corporate distributions? And as an added bonus, the two companies will work on compatibility, mentioning specifically Novell developing code to support Microsoft's Office Open XML in OpenOffice. Microsoft will push SUSE. OK, so it is wonderful for Novell. This move instantly makes SLES (SUSE... Read more...
Buying a PC with Linux installed and ready to go -- what an attractive idea. Novell thinks so too, and has announced agreements with four manufacturers to distribute PCs pre-loaded with SuSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10. An age of choice in operating systems is upon us and Novell is making sure that choice is becoming easier. R Cubed, a U.S. based vendor, is suppling a low end machine just under $500 dollars and a high machine coming in just over $3500. You can expect to see more rigs setup in similar fashion from major PC vendors in the near future, as evidenced by Lenovo's recent announcement... Read more...
