If you’ve connected to a WiFi network at an airport, convention, or even at the mall around Christmas, you’ve probably experienced a common problem: an overloaded WiFi network. Get too many people on the same access point, and you end up with a slow, spotty connection. Researchers at North Carolina State University have developed a solution that can boost WiFi performance by as much as 700 percent, they claim. Since RealNetworks announced RealDVD (available today, if you are interested), it was obviously there would probably be some kind of legal action.  After all, the product rips DVDs to your hard drive, though it purports to not just maintain the original DRM but in fact adds another layer of protection. Grab your tinfoil hats people, the conspiracy theories are about to start flying. The FBI just recently finished conducting an investigation into the networking components being used by the government."Operation Cisco Raider uncovered 3,500 counterfeit Cisco network components, with an estimated value of $3.5 million.  According to the FBI’s briefing of the Office of Management and Budget, the counterfeit equipment could allow the remote jamming of networks thought to be secure and possibly could allow access to networks remotely."The FBI is understandably concerned that counterfeit components... Universities and research institutes routinely need to swap huge amounts of information. Many of them have relied on two non-profit Internet networks, Internet2 and National LambdaRail, to supply them with the dedicated superfast network connections they require.  Talks aimed at merging the two have been sporadically attempted. The latest round of negotiations has fallen apart again, and it appears the idea is dead now. MTV has decided to shut down its URGE service, while joining RealNetworks and Verizon Wireless together in a joint venture, centered around RealNetworks' Rhapsody.  URGE users will be able to migrate their accounts from URGE to Rhapsody. As part of this alliance, MTV Networks and Real are forming a new company, Rhapsody America, whose offering will be the exclusive digital music service for Real and for MTV Networks' premier music and pop culture brands in the United States. BigFoot Networks, the makers of the Killer Network Interface Card, have launched a new, more affordable version of the product.  The first Killer NIC, aka the M1, sells for roughly $250. There has been a lot of talk within the industry of consolidation as of late. AMD's acquisition of ATI has been a hot topic ever since it was announced.  And that acquisition has spurred rumors of an unlikely merger between Intel and NVIDIA. YouTube.com has seen tremendous growth since its start back in February of 1995, thanks in part to its ability to let anyone become the star of their own show.
