It's tough to say when, or if, the heralded USB port will ever be truly replaced in the eyes of the masses. But Thunderbolt is sure working towards becoming a great secondary option, if not an outright replacement in time. At this year's NAB Show in Las Vegas, Intel announced Thunderbolt 2. It's the latest edition of the high-speed transfer protocol, with a bandwidth boost up to 20Gbps. Moreover, there's the addition of Thunderbolt Networking, which effectively acts as a crossover cable in order to allow two computers to directly connect and share information over a high-speed superhighway. Thunderbolt... Read more...
Glasses-free 3D? For many, it's a pipe dream. The newest 3D revolution, which roughly began around the time that CES 2010 started, has faded somewhat. Yes, it's still booming in cinemas, but having to wear glasses just doesn't seem that appealing in the home. That said, the concept of seeing 3D without any facial intrusions is a bright one, and both Dolby and Philips think that it may be sooner rather than later before that concept comes to life. The two companies have unveiled Dolby 3D, a 3D HD format and suite of technologies designed to deliver full HD 3D content to 3D-enabled devices, including... Read more...
The news just keeps flowing from NAB 2010. G-Technology, who has since been teamed with Hitachi in the storage realm, just announced new drives today aimed at professionals in the content creation industry, but if we know you, we're guessing you have just as big a need for archiving as the folks who do this stuff for a living. At the expo, G-Tech is showcasing two new additions to the G-SPEED family: the G-SPEED Q and the G-SPEED FC XL 8Gb/s Fibre Channel solution. It's clear that both of these are fairly high-brow products, marketed to give content creators, broadcasters and filmmakers "more reliable,... Read more...

If you think the contents of your work computer are your business and only your business, then think again. Applying federal rulings from other jurisdictions to help guide its ruling, the New Jersey State Appeals Court ruled in a recent case that "an employee has no reasonable expectation of privacy in personal files stored on a company-owned computer." This is a significant finding as it sets a precedent for the state of New Jersey, and adds to other similar rulings from the 4th and 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals (U.S. v. Angevine and U.S. v. Simons, respectively). In fact, not only did the... Read more...
One of the biggest laments iPhone users have about the iPhone is that it lacks voice dialing. How and when that key missing feature gets added is still open to speculation, but the engineers at AT&T Labs Research have at least been cooking up a way for developers to easily implement voice controlled applications for "multimedia devices with broadband access," such as the iPhone 3G. AT&T has developed a software framework that it calls the AT&T Watson Speech Mashup.
